There is still a lot of room for either us to win 1st place.

I was called today by a couple of people on my way home from the tournament to be given the sad news for me. Alex Moiseyev boosted his poinst from 18 to 22 in the last round by winning both games from Albert Tucker. This places him as the winner and I came in second with 21 points. It was a great tournament although there was a small number of people who attended this year. He won $400.00 and I won $250.00.

Alex Moiseyev boosted his poinst from 18 to 22 in the last round by winning both games from Albert Tucker.

In the past several tournaments Michael gave me very tough competition and actually I want to thank him for this. For many years to come, since 2002, and especially after Elbert Lowder passed away, I didn't have a serious competition in most of state tournaments and this really hurt my motivation.

This year in Tumboldt Michael exceptional performance (7 wins, no losses) and also important victory over Larry Keen pushed me to win almost all games against "average players" in order to finish one point ahead of Michael. Albert Tucker is a good player and certainly belong to Master Division, and I had a very hard goal to accomplish.

A. I wasn't very happy with choice of opening because though it is not very critical but uneven enough to erase my chances to win both games. In other hands I still had to win at least one game to tie with Michael, and at this point I probaly shouldn't complain too much

B. Pleasant surprise ! This move equalize the game and white advantage is disappear. In the first game I played here 21-17 and game continued ... 8-11 (weak), 17-14 (17-13 strong), 4-8, 28-24, 11-15, 26-23, 8-11 (loses, 6-10 instead was correct), 30-26, 2-6, 29-25, 6-9 (6-10 can be well meet by 23-19*, 10x17, 19x10, 7x14, 26-22 etc WW), 26-22 and after several moves red resigned.

C. Kingsrow opening book recommends here 1-6 as best which is probably true but give me a little help to get a winning chances 5-9 is more aggressive move, and also I saw here (and was hoping for!) a trade two for two which happened in game.

D. Over aggressive trade which I took immediately without any doubts. However, if meet properly (see next note), could lead to the quick unfortunate draw.

E. See diagram #1 after trade. All complications and red hopes can be erase by fine 17-14*, 9x18, 27-23, 18x27, 32-23 with following 30-26. I was very lucky that Albert missed this opportunity. In other hands I should note that I also didn't see this possibility during the game!

F. An attempt to catch a man at this point looks very suspicious and gives red a very good game after 30-25, 25-22, 31x22, 14-17, 22-18, 17-21 etc Red strong

G. See diagram #2. This move (23-18) doesn't lose yet, but gives red a very good game and winning chances leading to very uncomfortable ending for white - as happened in the game, Instead, 24-19, 7-10, 23-18 (30-26 also Draw) would be much easy draw for white.

H. This move prevents 19-15, 23-19.

I. Loses! See diagram #3. I knew in general that somewhere here white still should have a draw, but only program helped to find a true: 19-16*, 11-15 (or 2-7, 9-6, 2x9, 13x6, 1x10, 23-19 Draw), 16-11* Draw!

J. Childish beauty - old trick but still works! See diagram #4 below. 3-7 here loses pretty by 22-25, 7x14, 25-21 WW

The tournament, Master Division, was played in Round Robin format, 7 rounds - 4 on FridaY and 3 on Saturday.

A) 11-15 was the attack that Larry used against me.}
AA) 25-22 is slightly better
B) 9-13 is slightly better and is the only move given in Richard Pask's "The Golden Dozen".
C) 30-25 is a little easier after 22-26 XX 7-10
D) loses. 26-22 still has time to draw but neither Larry or myself saw this.
E) I was very fortunate to win this game. I seldom win a game from Larry.

(A) A GOOD PP ATTACK FROM Michael and a transposition from the single corner ………..in Master Play.

(AA) 2824!! (see Cannings Comp)THIS WAS A defensive “COOK” I PLAYED ON MAC BANKS ABT 6-7 YRS AGO BUT GOING INTO A strong MAN DWN POSITION FOR RED , AS Michael says 25-22 generally better but its not without its problems either against the killer attacks red has to hand, MB THIS IS WHY Larry played 2824 to avoid these.

Cannings Cook- See……Var3
In Cannings defensive “cook” on the Black Widow in Var 3 below 11-16 23-19 16-23 26-19* I spent about 12 months exploring the theory which Hellman had years earlier rejected, when he discarded this particular line to the dust bin.

Having said that, present technology certainly played its part, something Hellman wouldn’t of had at his disposal at the time. It was what you might call a “pet” project of mine and there have been a few of them, some that didn’t end in successful conclusions I can honestly say.

(B) 9-14 is ok but,…913 PP N BEST forces white into the “cook”(now book knowledge is everything) and the draw choices are limited for white.

(C1) 3025PP BUT 3026 LOOKS OK

(C) AND 2-6 IS ALSO GOOD for red

(D)….Larrys 2925 seems a bit calous here tho it still drs ok (was he hoping for a win?) while 1713 1st simplifies the position completely to an easy draw, but hindsight is 20/20.

A well played Ty by Michael who it could be said from recent results is 2nd best in the USA only to da “man” Alex, that hasn’t gone un-noticed.


CORRECTION TO THE DATE, IT WAS ACTUALLY 2001 WHEN I PLAYED THIS "DEFENSIVE" COOK ON MAC I THINK IN THE wORLD qUALIFIER WITH THE WINNER TO PLAY G.MILLER AND OF COURSE MAC WON THAT QUALIFIER AND BEAT GEORGE LATER FOR THE MAIL TITLE WHICH HE STILL HOLDS.
