VA state tournament

Post by vhabgood »

We have 10 players so far and here are some updates after 5 rounds on the first day:
Bill Salaat-18pts
Victor Habgood-14pts
Mike Ross-14pts

I will post more in the morning when I can see the scorecards. JR Smith gave some games away unfortunately due to blunders. Bill Salaat has played perfect so far with only 2 draws, the rest wins. Bill Mclintock hasnt played so well. Buck Smith is running the tournament, which we decided to be a round robin of 9 rds. More to come tomorrow morning.

The final results will be on JR Smith's website probably in a day or so. I can tell you that Bill Salot (i think this is how JR said it was spelled) won, I took 2nd, Mike Ross 3rd, Teal Stanley 4th and Bill Mclintock 5th. There was some great games and some very interesting positions that arose from this tournament. Next year's Virginia tournament will probably have quite a few more players. Hope to see you all there next year!

Greetings:

As a fellow Virginian, I would also like to congratulate Bill Salot.

Although I have never met him, I can remember reading an article he wrote in an issue of Elam's CheckerBoard back in the 1960s.

If my memory is correct, the title of his article was Why Can't I Win At Checkers?

This makes his tournament victory all the more meaningful.

Best Wishes,

Greetings Jay:

WOW!

I am amazed that I managed to remember the exact title of that article after reading it over 40 years ago.

For some reason, that article has always stuck in my mind.

Once again, I want to commend you for the outstanding job you have done with the creation of the Online Museum Of Checkers History.

You and Liam Stephens and Ken Lovell deserve the highest accolates in our Checkered world for the creation of this remarkable site.

Please ignore the negativity of anybody who tries to tell you otherwise.

Keep up the great work!

Best Wishes,

Dennis Cayton
