District 4 (NC) 2010

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

I just came back from Lexington. What a wonderful event we had in Baptist Church !!! I was here first time and long time since I played in District 4. 29 players played in 2 Divisions. I finished 1st in Master Division with 24 points (from 32), and Tim Laverty was second with 21 points. I don't have a full complete list and final standing cross table because I left earlier. It was a hard fight for the 3rd place between Teal Stanley, Larry Pollard and Mike Choatte.

In Major Division my friend Neil Wenberg was leading with good margin after 6 rounds.

I hope JR or someone else put here a full complete list.

First price in Master Division was $400.

It was a wonderful dinner we had on Saturday night served by Church members and same quality lunch on Sunday. I played several interesting games which I will post in other topic later.

Many thanks to organisers, church members and referee - it was truly remarkable time !

My participation in AL State in Honeyville next weekend is in big clouds  Will try to make it but as of today - still undecided.

Regards,

AM

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

Congratulations Alex on another fine win.

The others never stood a prayer(even if it was held in church) :)

I am still hoping to be at Alabama hope you make it.

Best regards from one of your early sparring partners,

Wayne

Wayne, many thanks for kind words. I'll do my best to get to AL tourney which I didn't miss in the past 3 years. But different years - different deals.

For instance, as part of school project, today my daughter organised a "dog contest" in our neighboorhood to find out which dog runs faster and why. 8 dogs so far signed in  I will be in referee committee.

I have no idea what may happened next weekend and what else may come to my daughter (or other family member) head !!!

On your score sheet JR............why does Alex and Tim play 4 times out of 8 rounds?.

Stupid system ... this sytem every round pair players with closest number of points disregard the fact that they played in the past or not (classic Swiss).

I told them in the beginning of event that this is absolutely unfair system. In our first two rounds with Tim I "honestly" played with my full strength and beat him in one game in each round, but in two other late rounds I agreed with draw in both games against Tim, because I do beleive that this system doesn't work right.

With this system we can easy get a situation where one player finish ahead of other who meets in many rounds with strong opponent(s). I suggested them next year to revise this system and change it.

Alex

District 4, 2010 was an excellent tournament. Tim did an excellent job as referee/scorekeeper and Larry was a gracious host and organizer of a fine tournament. Mrs. McClintock is a super cook and the organizer of an excellent, mouth watering supper on Friday night and a fine lunch on Saturday. 29 players provided an excellent crowd and there was spirited competion in both the A and B classes. Generous prize funds were provided and the playing area was first class. What more can a checker player look forward to in regard to an ideal, first class tournament.

I totally agree with Neil and totally agree with Tommy - format and system are technical questions and have nothing to do with organisation, atmosphere and spirit.

Nicely and lovely done. Tim was very good referee, no conflicts at all no issues !

They run this poor system for District 4 for many years and it wasn't an organisers choice. I remember some yers ago I played with Elbert Lowder 5 or 6 rounds out of 8 ! Grrr ...
