Now it is time to turn to the Top Event of 2012, the World Mind Sport Games in Lille.

Today I started a website for the results that will also include games and pictures. So far the games are that of the 1st round San Remo 2011 and the pictures are that of Beijing 2008, but I will update as soon as I am in Lille:

Top Event of 2012

Wrong topic, we just finished ACF National 2012

I don't think an event in Lille can exceed Lebanon tournament in terms of overall average strength even though we have few more outstanding players.

But of course QT is higher event in terms of importancy and presentation.

If all that had been nominated show up it could get a greater number of Grandmasters and International Masters then the US Nationals, and the Top will have a greater rating average, but this depends on who actually shows up, so we dont know until it started.

Also there will certainly more countires represented, and more continents.

So sad you could not come to defend your title and improve the US medal count.

BTW. In ACF National 2012 we had 6 GMI's : A. Moiseyev, R. King, L. Kondlo, R. Hallett, J. Francis, J. Morrison

In Lille you should have R. King, R. Beckwith, J. Morrison, S. Scarpetta, M. Borghetti, S. McCoser, B. Durdyev ... anyone else ? Does William Docherty, Jack Francis and/or Mustafa Durdyev attend an event ?

Look at the provisonal list of players. It is not the current stand of the affairs, but it gives a picture.
Plus, you can never know who actually turns up.

Certainly Miki, Sergio and Ron are favorites, but Baghtiyar and Jim and Richard are no dark horses. And the rest may prove better then their reputation.

I am especially curuious how Matteo Bernini will do.
He might be better then his title and rating status indicate


Looks like August is the month for checkers in this year.

Sadly, Shane had to withdraw.

Ingo: you'll have a more accurate average rating if you assign unrated players a provisional 1600 rating. Obviously they are stronger than that if they were invited, but right now all the zeros are dragging down the mean.

True, each unrated player drags down the total avrerage in your arithmetic, but not of the Top 5 or Top 10. And if u enter 4000 for each unrated player, you get a totally different picture

Anyway, this were probably the best US Open this century, while I dont dount that Beijing 2008 was stronger then Lille 2012, so there is still space to improve.

For 2012 however I will wait who shows up in Lille, and then make a conclusion.

And we still havent seen the Irish Open, though I doubt it can compare in top strenghts and broad strengts to the US Nationals or the WMSG.

However, QT, US Nationals and IO are always the Top events of the year.

I can predict very high competition in Lille but affraid to make any prediction. We have so far at least 6-8 players who will be fighting for medals. And another big group of "medium players" can drew or even win a single game against leaders.

Very interesting !

Remember, other forms of checkers in Lille including FMJD authorities will be watching us. It is important to look professional, attractive, competitive, presentative.

Oprening Ceremony of WMSG-2 completed at 7:00 PM on July 9. Ceremony was in in the n the Vauban Auditorium of Lille Grand Palais. After ceremony it was a cocktail at 20:00

It seems like everyone is in the air so far and first news should come tomorrow.

Quality of many (not all indeed) 64 and 10x10 games are below ground zero level just beginners. Many players consider this event as nice vacation.

I hope this will not affect OUR Anglo-American Checkers events and we'll demonstrate our collegeaus from other form of game real competition and quality !

I don't need a cheap win in the World Title match (ha-ha) and expect the best and danger challenger next year.

I arrived in Lille today, and met many fellow draughts players, though it seems I am the first player arriving in the "Checkers" event.

The venue is big and if we "share " a room with draughts 64 it is actually misleading, as it is more a big hall then a room.

Alex, most of the draughts 100 games are rapid and blitz games, as the play rapid if the normal game is drawn, and a blitz game if that was drawn, ans finally Lehmann blitz, a game with 5 minutes each and 3 sec. per move, but if the game is drawn, the next blitz starts with the time both players had when the draw was made.

This way it can get 6 or more games, but it ends with a decison.

A win in the normal game is 12-0 points to the winner, a win in the rapid (after drawn normal games) is 9 points to the winner, and 3 to the loser, a win in the regular blith game is 8-4 points and a win in Lehmann blitz is 7-5 points.


As all top baords are electronic boards, most games are rapid, blitz or Lehmann blitz games, which explains the mistakes that have been made.

Tomorrow I wll check the room with the 64 officials (already had a very good 1st impression), and Lille is very nice town, always worth a trip, with or without playing Checkers.
