I have been running numerous engine tests on a high end modern desktop PC. It seems like while GUI NN 2.06 as the third best machine learning based modern engine, it is much better than the old hand crafted Cake 1.85 in crossboard.
However with opening books on, Cake 1.85's 1.8 million opening book is too much for it and came out a clear winner. So in practice it seems like the old Cake 1.85 with the 1.8 million opening book and 8 piece database, is as good as any prog in 3 moves when books are on.
So I wouldn't say GUI NNUE is better than any checkers prog before 2018, that is only true with no opening books.

- What do you like about checkers?: Hi, checkers is a technical strategy game much like chess with a never ending way to improve your game. I have played both American pool and straights checkers as well as a little 10x10 and they are all great games.
