Lowder plays the psychology game

Post by william »

Hi All

That 1317 was also played by Lowder in the 1983 USA GB match against Oldbury AGAIN!!!!
This time I think 'he' managed to draw (I will not say who 'he' is ;;;that is a delicate subject LOL)
Another line that Lowder likes to play is the 913 defense on 1014 2420 710
Now he played that for ex. in 1973 and 1983 USA GB matches.Everyone knows that he plays that move and that it is very weak if not an outright loss;;but somehow the wins scored by lowder on that line seem to intimidate his opponents and they lose control of themselves and the position

Here is a couple of wins scored by Elbert Lowder against two of the best checker players that ever lived using this odd 13-17 move.

1115 2319 9-13 2218 1522 2518 13-17!! 2114 1017 27-23 (A) 5-9 3227 9-13 1815 6-9 2925 9-14 2420 1721 2724 1417 1511 8-15 19-10 7-14 24-19 4-8 31-27 3-7 25-22 1-5 27-24 2-6 1915 7-11 2218 6-9 2419 1722 2610 9-14 18-9 5-14 10-7 1127 7-3 2731 1915 3127 Red Wins. E. Lowder vs DM Lafferty Petal 1989 Game #10.

(A) 2925 5-9 2522 1721 2723 8-11 2420 4-8 3227 6-10 1916 1219 2316 10-14 2724 1423 2619 9-14 2217 1418 3127 1822 1714 8-12 Red Wins-E. Lowder vs. DE Oldbury Dublin 1979 Game 13

In game 11 Dublin 1979 Lowder played 1317 against Oldbury and Oldbury drew the game but lost as shown above in game 13.

In 1983 at US Nationals , Lowder defeated R. Stinnett with this move but lost to former American champion PM Davis in same ty.

In 1983 Lowder again tried this move on Oldbury in USA vs. UK match 1983 and Oldbury was able to draw.

In 1989 Tim Laverty, a close friend of Lowder , used this move to score a win over Ron King in U. S. National ty but in same ty. Tim Laverty lost to former ACF President Les Balderson when he tried to use move on Les.

In 1995 Lowder tried this 13-17 move on Ron King in games 8 and 14 and lost both games to King. Ron King once told me while we were rooming together at a tourney in North Carolina that he only studies the end game . Ron showed me a manuscript that he had put together of only end games that was about 6 inches thick. After seeing his improvement from the way he played the 1317 move against Tim Laverty in 1989 and against Lowder in the wins of 1995, I seriously doubt that Ron only studies the end game. If anyone doesn't have any of the games I mentioned, then let me know and I will post them for you.

All the best,
Mac Banks
