Selected Positions in Lille, Rd1 (Men)

I am starting here now a new series of "Selected Positions in Lille" which include all most interesting things I find. This work do not pretend to be a final word or any serious, deep analyses of games with professional comments and references. This important work is still ahead and I hope other experts join me.

I will create a separate topics for each round.

Quite impressive - not looking very natural 1-6 is OK but 3-7 as Jim played, is already complete loss ... amazing !

O. Kolin vs R. King, G1

It was shown in Sixth that 7-10 here is probably the only move giving red an even game. Oleksandr played 11-16? here and eventually lost.

I. Martinov vs V. Shafir, G1

Igor played here 32-27? to unfortunate draw. Very costly mistake. 20-24 instead should win the game after 19-15, 32-28, 15-10, 7-11, 10-6, 11-15, 18x11, 9x22, 30x21, 27-24 WW

C. Freeman vs U. Hydyrov, G1

11-16?? 3-7 Draw Knowing Chuck as a very ambitious man, I understand now better what happened with him in this tournament. This first game in first round was a very big psychological shock for him where he was unable fully recover to the rest of event ... just guessing.

S. Thrane vs G. Owens, G1

6-10?? No cigars ! Loses at earlier stage. This position is well known to PP where both 3-7 and 8-11 are sound and recommended. it was shown in Sixth that 12-16 at this point gets red into serious troubles though not loses yet.

White to move and win

J. Jolliff vs D. Oliphant, G1

Red last move was 8-11? which suppose to lose. Mr. Oliphant played drawn 29-25 here but later won the game without much problems. I find it quite interesting and curious that Kingsrow opening book has here the followng long play generated by program. Is this the only winning way for white ?! Anyway, good thing to know how to beat losing 8-11? at earlier stage. Continue from diagram ,,,

Red previous move here was 11-16 which is out of order, 4-8 was correct. White responded 30-26? and after 9-13 play returned back on PP. It seems like in position on diagram after 17-13 white has scientific win. Continue from diagram ... 17-13, 3-7, 31-26 and now red has two ways:

22-18 is correct giving white even game, but 22-17? (as played) loses.

Continue from diagram #1 ... 17-22? (9-13 or 4-8 Draw), 13x22, 9-13, 19-16, 13x22, 27-24, 20x27, 32x23, 11x20, 14-10, 6x15, 18x2, 22-25 2-6, 25-29, 6-10, 29-25, 21-17, 25-22, 17-13, 22-17, 23-19, 4-8, 19-15, 8-11, 15x8, 3x12 and we reached position on diagram #2. here Igor missed a win after 31-27? (31-26* is correct), but Vitaly didn't accept this gift and after 17-21, 10-14, 21-25, 13-9 played losing 25-30? instead 12-16* to draw.

R. King vs O. Kolin, G2

Oleksandr didn't play accurately in the beginning of game, having a strong side of opening 10-15, 22-17, 9-13 but here he still had a chance to play beautiful 31-26* which saves the game. Instead, he played losing 30-26? and eventually ran out of moves.

Red to move

D. Oliphant vs J. Jolliff, G2

This particular game was really a comedy of errors where logical scientific result of game changed several times. I strongly recommend you play this game on your own and enjoy all beauties and missings. I am giving here the last moment where result was changed.

Red played here 16-20?? (16-19 or 11-15 wins) and after 22-18* draw was soon agreed.

Bill, be accurate with terminollogy - there are no PROBLEMS in "Selected ... "posts, these are POSITIONS. Requirements to compositional problems are much more restrictive:

economic finals, economic solutions, no duals, no alternative soluition.

All these requirements hardly apply to practical postions from real events.
