IN 2010, Rd3, G2

Here is position from IN 2010 which I played with Michael Holmes having white pieces. Very instructive and educatable ending idea.

#1. Red to move and draw ......... #2. Red to move, white wins.

27-24*

During the game, in position on diagram #1 Michael played 27-23 and lost pretty. Draw was still available after 27-24, 3-8, 24-19 to stop 8-11. If, instead, in position on diagram #1 red makes any other move, 9-6, 27-31 or 27-32, white plays 3-8-11 and pushes red King from square 9 and free white pieces.

Continue from game ... 27-23?, 18x27, 9x18, 3-7, 5-9, 7-2, 9-13, 27-31 ... Here Michael played 18-22 and lost quickly after 2-6, 22-18, 6-9, 18-15, 9-14 WW. During and right after the game I thought that Michael missed a draw by playing 18-14 instead 18-22.

However, after 18-14, 2-6 scientific win is there ! See diagram #2. There are two diffent ways red can try here, but both are loses.

1) 13-17, 30-26*, 14-18, 6-9 (or 6-10) 18-22, 10-14, 22-25, 14-18, 25-22, 18x25, 30x21, 26-22 WW

2) 14-9, 6-1, 13-17, 31-26 9-13, 26-23, 17-22, 23-18, 22-25, 28-22, 25-29, 1-6 WW
Pretty.

continue from game ... 27-23?, 18x27, 9x18, 3-7, 5-9, 7-2, 9-13 ??, 27-31 ... Here Michael played 18-22 and lost quickly after 2-6, 22-18, 6-9, 18-15, 9-14 WW. During and right after the game I thought that Michael missed a draw by playing 18-14 instead 18-22.

its not 27-23 that loses for Holmes.........but after 7-2 9-13? putting the piece in a BAD SQUARE??

after 7-2 9-14** DRAWS EASILY............GOOD SQUARE......DRAW

and if 2731 instead of 7-2 then 1822 and utilising the man on 21 as a double corner .

Tommy, why you don't trust me ?

If I said 27-23? is a lost that means it's a lost.

27-31* wins

I am giving here only one line, you can discover other play on your own:

27-31, 18-22, 2-6, 22-17, 6-9, 14-18, 9-13, 17-14, 13-17, 14-10, 30-26, 18-22, 26-23, 22-25, 17-22, 25-29, 31-26 WW

27-31 instead 7-2 also wins with same ideas. White can avoid here Macintosh draw (position #6)

What kind of ending database you are using ? Or it was just observation on your part, not analyses ?

From line which I posted above ...

It i also an interesting fact to mention that in position on diagram white has a win only if move is right. Without white move this position is drawn. Same thing if red King is on another side (28) of board. Good thing to know.

Wow. Where else on the Internet (or anywhere else, for that matter...) can you go and receive near-real-time instruction on any game/sport from the reigning World Champion??

We are lucky lads.

Thanks Alex! Much appreciated.
