New website design

Post by clintolsen »

Can whoever the current webmaster is please take my name ("Original site design by Clint Olsen") out of the footer of the main acf page? I think the latest updates to the design of the website are a huge step backwards and I no longer wish to have my name associated with it.

Thanks,

Clint

Yeaaa ... coloring could be better

Letters design on front side actually is OK in my eyes. And one more thing - we have a lot of empty space on the left and right side which can be used for good - marketing and promotionals purposes, pictures, sponsors advetisement etc.

Regarding topic issue - I agree and support Clint demand, it is his name and we can't just put it anywhere without his permission. I think we have to remove it if we respect Clint and work he done for us in the past.

Sorry Clint, I didn't even think about it. That footer has been there as long as I can remember and forgot what it even said. Your name has already been removed.

Unfortunately ;its all in pretty bad taste,a rudderless ship,it would have been only good manners at least to consult before changing, surely?

Jason, on the left side of front page there is "Find Event" bottom. I like it's design and colors much more than blues for upcoming events.

About center ...

I like yeallow background + black letters, but I don't like greens.

Anyway ... it's just my personal opinion only and food for thoughts. I don't evn know - what other and maybe better options we have. I certainly recommend you to think about this and play with your testing.

I am very sure this is the major thing make Clint sick

Helpfull website suggestions

Post by MostFamousDane »

This is how the current ACF home page looks on my computer

Image

Here are some suggestions for improvement to Jason or who ever is responsible for the website.

A. The logo seems a bit strained I would increase the space on all sides of the logo.

B. I would consider the vertical placement of this text and maybe center it in the purple background

C. I would consider placing this box a less prominent place - the color clashes with the rest of the colours around it and it makes the page look messy. Get rid of the ACF site only box and make that the only option - the only reason to have this box is to search the ACF site. If you insist of the current placement at least center it vertically in the purple background.

D. Center this text vertically in the light blue background and reconsider the text colour.

E. The text overruns the space - either give more space or use less text. Reconsider the choice of green and yellow colours they clash with the other colours of the site.

F. I am assuming this is a bug ?

G. Ouch sorry this is really really awfull get rid of the back blue background to this text and use regular black text or something - anything but this!

H. Don't start the text right at the edge give it a little space

I. There seems to be too many extra vertical text pieces before the actual menu. Consider getting rid of this text piece or at least make it only one line instead of two lines.

J. Don't start the text right at the edge give it a little space

Much appreciated Sune.
I've started making some of the changes. Still trying to find a good combination of colors. I wanted a checkerboard look, so I used the colors from the board everyone seems to like for images. Apparently nobody likes it for backgrounds though.

The more I look at it the it, the more I'm thinking a complete redesign is in order.
I see no need to have a menu for the forum or store. A single link should be fine. Also the Transcripts, Ratings, and Tournaments could be moved under ACF Info.
WCDF also probably doesn't need it's own menu either.

You're welcome - I like the idea of having some kind of checkered theme -butI'm not sure it works very well on the menu though

Depending on how many of my suggestions you follow I think that you will find the overall look will improve alot but you guys could consider paying a graphical artist to help you ensure that the colours, fonts etc are just right for that professional look.

I think that there was nothing wrong with the previous design, which was much easier on the eye than the current design which I find rather garish. But thats just my opinion, other hay have a different viewpoint

Unfortunately, one cannot now access the menu items under:
"Other", "Transcript" or "Store".

Greetings:

I completely agree with the above.

I saw nothing wrong with the previous design.

The previous design was easier on my eyes.

The new design is harder on my eyes.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

I switched back to the old colors yesterday.
Which part is harder on your eyes?

And Liam, which browser are you using? I've tried several and not seeing the problem with the menus.
(edit: I think I may have found the issue on internet explorer but didn't seem to occur everytime for me. I added something to fix it and haven't seen it since. Let me know if you still have issues)

Hi Jason,
I use Internet Explorer.

I had another look at the main page and and found a solution, but there is something odd about it.

There are two status lines at the top of the screen. One with a light blue background, the other with a dark blue background. The "Store" menu is listed on both. If you click on "Store" that is on the light blue background a new page appears and on it The Other and Transcript menus are available and work properly as intended.

However, on the dark blue background line the last 3 items do not work because the item underneath (Weekly Random Game) gets in the way.

Hope this explains it better.

Jason,

Every few years my wife rearranges and redecorates our house, including color changes. She always asks, "What color theme would you like?" I always respond, "The next one". In other words, change is good to avoid the appearance of stagnation, and the color choice is hers.

I notice the Jolt Problems have stagnated a while. Would it be presumptious of me to inquire if there is a possibility of and interest in substituting future unpublished problem composing contest problems by living problemists? I fear many will overlook the next contest (February) because it will also be buried in the less frequently visited "POSITIONS" section of the Forum.

That was just a thought. I am happy with the responses to the first contest.
