Obituary- Henry Fugard "Viking545"

Post by Palomino »

I was saddened today to learn of the death of my good friend Henry Hansen Fugard, 74 years old, of Brooklyn, NY. Henry played checkers for many years in the Kings Room at MSN's Game Zone and later at Kurnik (PlayOk) under the name of Viking 545. He had many friends who simply referred to him as "Vik". In addition to checkers (note jacket) Vik loved baseball and was a "Die-Hard" New York Mets fan.

Henry traveled to Lebanon, TN and played in the Minors Division of the Tennessee State Checkers Tounament several times along with the New York State / District 2 Checkers Tournament in 2005.

Born January 10, 1936, Henry was the son of John and Mary Fugard. He is survived by his sister Evelyn Furgard of Brooklyn, NY, a son, Christopher Furgard of Florida and one grandson.

Henry has battled a number of serious health problems since 2004 and has had several hospital stays this year.

His cremated remains will be interred alongside his parents. In Ocean View Cemetery
3315 Amboy Road, Oakwood, New York 10306
(Richmond County)
No services are planned.

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.
