Stop Online Piracy Act

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a new bill thats been hotly debated on the internet the past few weeks. It was supposed to come to a vote earlier this week, but got pushed back until early next year.
On the surface it might sound good (who wouldn't want to stop piracy besides pirates?), but the wording of the bill is extremely generalized and there's much fear that it could "kill the web".

Basically the wording is such that if a site links to copyrighted material (for instance a forum member has a copyrighted picture of a cartoon as their avatar...) the entire site could be cutoff from receiving money, taken down, or the owner end up in court.

While those in favor of the bill argue that will never happen as it's designed to target foreign sites, the bill is written as such that it COULD. Thats a HUGE problem in my mind.

Feel free to post positive article too, I'm interested in hearing both sides because I just don't know enough. But it sounds bad to me.

So Jason you are saying i better change my avatar from angry birds to my photo and Alex better change it from Mickey Mouse to a photo of his trophies????

I think that lawyers do this on purpose word something very loosely, make it law and then that gives them YEARS OF FEES on litigation....

I am on the side of anti piracy, although i have downloaded a song or two (million) off the net in the past..... i also wish when im watching a blu-ray i didnt have to see the damn anti piracy warning...... if i bought a brand new movie clearly i dont need to be converted LOL

Maybe this is because creating quality software is very time consuming and very difficult. If you do invest time and money in creating quality software then when it is released people just pirate it. Getting back to the Stop Online piracy Act the bill is way too lenient I mean the pirates are not to be stabbed with a hot poker or anything else that they deserve .

There are lots of sites on the internet that exists solely to facilitate piracy that use the excuse that it is the users who upload the infringing material and the sites owners actually earn money on this. It is just plain commen sense to remove this excuse.
