father and son team

Post by albert tucker »

Right now I think the strongest father and son team in the USA is Wayne and Justin Gober, from OK.They need to stake their claim now because Mike and young Alex Holmes is gaining on them. Was wondering if other father and son teams in USA exist that I am unaware of.

I don't know many modern day players, but if you consider the best father-son teams of checkerists in bygone years, it would be hard to beat Dr. W. B. Banks and his son Newell W. Banks.

I feel honored for Justin and I to even be mentioned among so many fine father-son players. A fun thread here.
I was thinking maybe to broaden to "all time" world wide. The team of N. Banks and father have already been mentioned. Are there others?
I can think of several brother teams. One that will always hold a special place with me are the Rawsons from Oklahoma,
Dave and Dude. I played many games with both these guys in the back of Dave's music store. In my opinion, Dave was a little stronger, but he never won the Oklahoma State title and Dude did. Dave was several times runner-up. The Ellis bros. who I only recently met are a strong brother team also.

Oviously Durdyev family must be mentioned here:

1) Father, 3 Sons and Daughter

2) 3 International Grandmasters - Amangul, Mustafa and Bagtiyar, Hoja and Bashim are National Grandmasters I beleive.

3) Bagtiyar and Amangul (two titles) are World Champions.
I am playing checkers, not chess.

I doubt if this family has ever been or ever will be equaled again in strength.
It is quite amazing that they all possess the natural ability.

I've always been of the opinion that anyone can learn to play pretty good, but to attain the top level you must be born with the necessary capacity.

Music is one place this is often obvious, some are just born with the ability.

Perhaps a topic for another thread?

Jumping at the chance for an extra checker,
Wayne Gober
