I found this last week and i really think it is very very difficult to disagree with Mr William Timothy Call. "the oldest, simplest, and
most scientific mental pastime known to man." INDEED .

By the way print on demand offers "Literature of Checkers: Embracing All the Books, Pamphlets, and Magazines on the Game of English Draughts, Commonly Known as Checkers" on various different sites.

In his preface to the "Literature of
Checkers" , Mr. W. T. Call writes as fol-
lows:-"Draughts is another name for
checkers, and is preferred by all British
and by some American, writers. The
game is played in every English-speaking
community in the world. It is historically
known as the. ancient game. The term
'ancient game' was first used by the
checkers in its purity from Spanish,
Italian. Polish. German, and Turkish
draughts, all of which are different games,
and each of which has a literature of its
own. All the foreign forms of the game
are commonly referred to as 'draughts."
The word 'checkers,' on the other hand,
is limited in its meaning to the English
game-the ancient game. Research, ex-
amination and experience cause me to re-
gard checkers as the oldest, simplest, and
most scientific mental pastime known to
man."

"Caveat Emptor"

Several of these reprints are truncated editions of the originals with pages or material missing.
The Call for example has only 36 pages and the detail against the items listed is missing.
The edition of Payne dates from 1795 (not 1756) and does not contain the Dr Johnson dedication or preface.

I find it annoying that sometimes they sell print on demand books on Amazon or abebooks without saying expressly so.
You buy it but dont know if it is legit or not till u get it in your hands.

i found a really good price on a book but upon phoning the seller in wichita (i never knew that place existed) it was revealed that it was a print on demand book which i turned down respectfully.

To be honest Liam, i dont even know the book mentioned above, i found the quote interesting and the newspaper clipping from so long ago as well.
Thanks for the warning though, you can never be too careful.
