Also on the picture that shows the "Country vs City" Match i couldnt help but to notice two famous surnames
Chamberlain and Boland.... i am not sure if they are the same but it interested me. Also check how many female players
they had in a very insignificant match in the middle of Tasmania (which has never been a highly populated area).

Hi John sorry i should've google mapped where Wednesbury was.... it was night time for me and i didnt think of doing that.
I found this information in the National Library of Australia website http://www.nla.gov.au/
in there they have digital copies of most newspapers for the whole country from 1800's onwards .... i tend to go and look for articles and stuff.... what is interesting to know is that in the late 19th century and early 20th century draughts had more followers than chess and a bigger presence in newspapers. most had a quarter page (daily !!!!!) dedicated to draughts.... a whole game, a problem, an article like the one i just posted and tournament results.... to see now a non existent federation here with no champs or clubs or any form of organisation is truly heartwrenching.... for me anyway.

PS i never had the pleasure of going as far as Wolverhampton but i have been in Cambridge, Oxford, Rugby and Coventry. Upon retirement i plan on a 12 month trip around the british isles but thats a long way yet.

it says here it is available for perusal at tasmania or you can order photocopies for $13.50 . it doesnt give me any more information and i logged in with my card. a lot of the materials are either in melbourne, canberra or launceston .... it seems thats where draughts was strongest in australia in victoria, tasmania and southern new south wales.

Have you looked up Hugh Egan and the Melbourne Weekly Times ?
I have a 6 year run of that newspaper column, but I believe it ran for over 50 years !
Probably the longest running draughts column ever.
I had not heard of Mr Egan ... but in my opinion the biggest and best draughts columns in australia were located in Melbourne and Perth.... i have to go through my files to find the newspaper articles or the people writing them .
