Re: 4 of our oldest checker players
This is sad news.
In 1966, while a member of the Long Beach Chess and Checker Club, I met Gerry Lopez and played a series of 13 practice games with him. Shortly thereafter we entered the 1966 American Championship Tournament in Fesno. The practice games must have been beneficial. Gerry finished third in the master section, after defeating some very strong players, and I managed to finish second in the major section.
Prior to this event Gerry organized an eight player training tournament at the Long Beach club and finished second to Leonard Hall and ahead of Leavitt, Markusic and others.
Gerry contributed many practical problemsm on a regular basis, to the Missourl Checker Association Newsletter. This feature will be missed.

Re: 4 of our oldest checker players
Readers of the forum must have been mystified by my recent post. There have been quite a few obituary notices of late and I mistakenly jumped to the erronious conclusion that this was another one. My sincere apologies to Paul M. Davis, Gerry Lopez, Harvey Powell and Ashley Reid.. Congratulations for all your contributions to our grand old game.
It appears that I have the oldest brain of anyone in the ACF!
Ed Atkinson, the duffer.
