The 29 January 1940 issue of Time featured Millard Hopper as the go-as-you-please checker champion.

The article foreshadows the legendary 1951 GAYP World Championship. Millard Hopper, the recognized champion, was challenged by Tom Wiswell to a best of 40 game match. Tom Wiswell won the 1951 match and the 1953 rematch, and went on to become a long term champion.
Wiswell and Hopper wrote a book about the 1951 match aptly titled Checker Kings In Action. Today, thanks to Wiswell and Hopper, and their many supporters, we still have an active GAYP World Championship. The current GAYP World Champion is Matteo Bernini of Italy.

Willie Ryan was a great promoter of checkers. Willie Ryan challenged Champion Walter Helman for the 3-Move Checkers World Championship in 1949. Willle Ryan battled Walter Helman to a tie match of 4-4-42, but in checkers as in boxing the champion retains the title in a tie match. Willie Ryan was known as the "undefeated challenger."
