Extract from an article by W. G. Parker in the New Draughts World, Vol 1, No 11, Sept 1937.The number of matches in the North of England for small stakes indicates the prevailing spirit there, and the sporting instinct peeps out amusingly in a match between Manchester and Liverpool, where it is reported the losers paid for the supper !
These team matches were well attended in the [18] eighties, for it is recorded that
Lanarkshire beat Glasgow by 153 games to 127; 111 were drawn.
