They played for their supper

Post by liam stephens »

The number of matches in the North of England for small stakes indicates the prevailing spirit there, and the sporting instinct peeps out amusingly in a match between Manchester and Liverpool, where it is reported the losers paid for the supper !
These team matches were well attended in the [18] eighties, for it is recorded that
Lanarkshire beat Glasgow by 153 games to 127; 111 were drawn.
Extract from an article by W. G. Parker in the New Draughts World, Vol 1, No 11, Sept 1937.
