 Lindus please excuse my delay in getting back to this question. I have been swamped here lately with other checker activities. Ben Franklin was a very good guess and I am sure that he enjoyed playing checkers throughout his lifetime, but unfortunately this was not the answer to our question. Please give it anothe try my friend. Mr. Checkers

My last guess will be the 18th President, Ulysses S. Grant who served during the years 1869 - 1877.

President Grant represented the State of Illinois as did President Abraham Lincoln, and President Harry S Truman represented the State of Missouri which is not far away.

I'm guessing that you have visited his home in Galena, Illinois.

On August 18, 1865, Galena, celebrated the return of its Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant. Following a jubilant procession with much flag waving and speeches, a group of Galena citizens presented the General with a handsome furnished house on Bouthillier Street.

The house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site

 Excellent answer Palomino. Ms. Becky and I have been to Galena probably over one hundred times over the years.--it is only 12 miles from our home. It is a unique small city that reflects the 1800's in its architecture. There are small shops of all kinds to be found there--antiques, gifts, pottery, etc. Galena draws thousands of visitors each year from throughtout the U.S.--many of whom visit Grant's home there. "Mr. Checkers
