Best that i can tell, there's a Black man on square 3 (not a King) so the boy must be playing the Black side. I don't see any White men on the board and the girl looks so happy. So maybe she has just won a game of Suicide Checkers.

What do you think Liam?

She is happy, because after 3x10 she wins by 15x9...

Position on the board is something like this ...

Girl is winning - that's why she is happy.

What I also like - it's price: 5 cents :D

I'm afraid I was much more interested in looking at those diamond patterned socks the boy is wearing. :D
Reminded me of Ciurlionis' Sonata of the Pyramids.

Liam, thanks for posting this vintage magazine cover. I have not seen this before!
That is very good attention to detail by the artist Sambrook; the artist knows his checkers!
Of course, the year 1928 places it in the era of the Great Gonotsky!

Hi George,
If you have a look at ebay, there is another picture (an ad for Fisk Tires) with exactly the same board position as in the one above.
Probably by the same artist, though not named on this one.

That girl must have learned checkers from her grandpa, smart kid! :)
