I may try to post a problem in this thread each Saturday or something. Here is one that I posted in another thread for fun, which Jake started to try to solve. The problem came from my Lees guide book.

Matthew, do you know - why authors placed here mans on 26 and 18 ?

I considered this too when I looked at it. It is not needed to show the lesson in the problem, but the authors used it maybe if position appeared from a game. Once I saw one solution to this problem, I did not look for another; I'm not sure if there is a solution that uses those two pieces.

16-20 at the 3rd move allows a draw by 23-19, 15-24, 8-3 etc. steal the man on 14. There is much more to this than meets the eye. The star move is 16-12* then 23-19 (trying for the same draw) but red still wins with the proper follow up.

I believe this is one of the best 3x3 problems ever published. Of course all programs have this in their ending database.

This incorrect solution is shown in the Little Giant Problem book with no credit on the problem to Mr. Byars.

Goooood job Bob That's what I meant on the: it's easy to choose the wrong move on that one. Bob, I found that one in my copy of Lees guide.

Yes, this is a classic problem, almost everyone makes the same mistake the first time they see the problem missing the required king pitch to win.
