Before i take off for Australia on Monday, where i am having an eight day holiday on the Gold Coast and Brisbane,I would like to continue the Dennis Cayton story and his fight to stop his eviction from his home.Im sure a lot of checker enthusiasts still have a high regard for Dennis and admiration for his determination to fight the injustice that is befalling him from a very nasty landlord.
Dennis had a court hearing on April 3rd in Norfolk,VA and the judge has granted Dennis a continuence to stay in his home and another new court date for an actual trial because there were so many complications and evidence to consider before making a decision,. Obviously this is a ;positive move for Dennis. The attorney acting for the landlord is using every nasty trick in the book to get Dennis out,and has been trying to bully, harrass and intimidate Dennis to no avail.
Once again i can only reiturate that the loss of Dennis to the checker community would be immense, and we need to support him in his fight.

Re: Dennis Cayton
More news from Dennis Cayton, this time great news. After Dennis appearance on April 3rd in court, the landlords attempt to evict Dennis from his apartment, the judge granted a continuence until April 9th,as he wanted to study Dennis's case further.Dennis had no attorney of his own to fight his case for him as he couldnt afford one,and acted on his own behalf.
On april 8th an investigator from the Virginia FAir Housing Office visited his landlord and his attorney for a official interrogation, and during this time asked the landlord for copies of all the tenants records in order to look up patterns of discrimination. The landlord and the attorney refused so the investigator submitted a subpoena to get them, which shook them up.
with the result that Dennis was offered a "deal"A limited lease of a further 6 months. In return for dropping the Virginia FAir Housing complaint, but the official from the Virginia FAir Housing told the attorney that their investigation could not be part of any agreement.DEnnis studied long and hard on what kind of offers he could make and found an attorney who could give him free advise.
Anyway, when DEnnis arrived at the courtroom, the landlords attorney called him into a seperate room where he tried to berate, browbeat and intimidate DEnnis to no avail.
Anyway in the finish DEnnis was offered a 12 month lease and he would not be liable for attorneys fees or court costs,so an agreement was reached.Good news for Dennis, who makes a living at his apartment tutoring private students. This will give him time to get on his feet again.
Congratulations Dennis on not submitting to bullying tactics or running.I am thrilled for you, regards Jan Mortimer
