There is a good chance that two players from Russia will be added to this list last minute - in the next couple days until end of May.

Just strong guess

Hi Tommy,
Wot!! No Kondlo?
Reads like when Napoleon's name was scratched from the title page of the Eroica.
But, of course, as they say-------- he met his Waterloo.

Quick! somebody send for Sir Alan.

Tommy, John Reade is coordinator from FMJD and maintain the list of attendants. However he doesn't have any influence on the National Federations decision and endorsement. I think the reason we don't see Lubabalo name on this list is his long time (for years) conflict with his own National Federation and Sport Depatrtment in Government. The Federation and Government made decision 1 or 2 years ago that he can't represent SA in any International events.

In addition, he didn't play in SA National tournaments since 2003 and he is not a member of SA Checkers Federation (whatever it;s called). Thats all I know about this very unfortunate story.

Alex

Alex is right that the SA situation is complicated, but so is the Barbadian and to a lesser degree was the German situation.
But I think that the WCDF would have nevertheless tried to invite him or to reach a compromise that could have seated him for Beijing.

Tht is why I am not sure if this the real reason behind him missing on the list.
Could be he also doesn't like 3-move, has no time or money or just wants to concentrate on the WC match this year.

Anyway I am pretty sure that John Reade and Hugh Devlin tried their best to have the best players possible in Beijing, and I just don't like the notion that they did not their best to let Kondlo play if he really wanted to or that anybody is boycotted.

Let me here say that the WCDF did handle the organisational matters concerning the WMSG much better then the IMSA or FMJD so far. Just look at the fact that Checkers is the only draughs event with a complete list of participants and officials available or a with all informations availabe to the players, and one official they can turn to with questions.
Let me say that especially John Reade, Hugh Devlin and Richard Beckwith invested a lot of money, time, and nerves to make the WMSG happen!
Looks like the WMSG event will be the most interesting for years, and may be a good promotion for our style/game.

BTW I also read that in the 1980's The ICHF held "Goodwill" invitational tournaments much like the concept of the WMSG with players invited form countries all over the world.
I think that in 1987 Derek Oldbury won it, but that Asa Long won it in an earlier year, and that also Ron King, Hugh Devlin, and at least one Soviet participant , Rostislav Leschinsky of Kiev, who beat King (and who later, I think in 1990, also played at the US nationals, along with other Soviet players, including Aleksandr Kandaurow) played there.
Does anyboday have the full results of 1987or other years, and the games or can tell me the source where I can find the games ?

In my personal opinion the number of officials must be increase. I think this number which we have today - 4, was accepted when the total number of players was around 20. However, this number (of players) was dramatically jumped in the past few weeks.

At least one person, "Main Referee", should be responsible for everything and being available at any time. Another person should perform "Secretary duties" and paperwork - which will be alot, trust me !We have now only 2 officials left on the field. 42 players means 21 board, 10-11 boards in average for everyone.

This is certainly not enough to cover comfortably all situations and having everything under control.

Just my personal opinion.

Nobody can be right ,including Alex,Ingo.........if Lubablo isnt in this Ty.!! If that s the politics of it then forget it.

Im making a stand on this one,if Kondlo is nt "allowed" to contest this Ty then its a sad day for the game.!!

Tommy, I can't be right or wrong for one simple reason - because I don't stand for anything. You asked a question: "Why Lubabalo Kondlo is not on this list ?" and I gave you an answer.

And the answer is - this is Olympic event where players represent their countries, and his country doesn't want him to be it's representative. WCDF, FMJD or IMSA has nothing to do with this.

I, personally, don't want to take any sides in this conflict because I don't have enough information and facts. But from what I know and heard - this is not an easy case. In other hands, if you are trying to say that world where we live is far from perfect - I totally agree with you !

4 more players were added to the list last minute:

1. N. Abatziyev ............. Russia
2. P. Yumshanov ........... Russia
3. K. Wills ................... USA
4. J. Van Niewkirk .......... New Zeland

It is an unfortunate fact that Netherland, Ukraine, Canada, and Brazilia were unable to send players to Olympiada.

I also know nothing about Draughts in South Africa or the organisation of the game there.
I probably would not even have noticed that Kondlo’s name was missing were it not for the fact that I recently read an article in the June 2008 ACF Bulletin where it is reported that Kondlo had won the African MSO Draughts event in Johannesburg, so, naturally, I assumed he was their top player and would automatically be chosen by his country.

The position is quite simple really:

1. If Kondlo does not wish to play in Beijing because he does not like 3 move, or wishes to spend his time preparing for the match with King, or for other personal reasons, then no one can complain.

2. However, if he does wish to play there, but is prevented from doing so by political machinations, then that is indeed a disgrace and I would have to agree with Tommy, that it is a sad day for the game.
