Re: 2008 A.C.F. 3- Move Nationals & Youth Ty.
The 2008 “Gene Lindsay†ACF National 3-move Tournament will be held in Las Vegas July 21 through 25 (Masters might finish on 26th). This will be a three-move restriction event using 156-opening deck and Swiss system. Recording of games and time clocks will be used in the Master’s group. (Players in other divisions are welcome to do the same, but optional). Clocks and scoresheets will be provided. Masters will use a tough deck consisting of 80 openings if the round is tied after the first two games. All divisions will play eight four-game rounds. The Masters will use the traditional round scoring. The Majors and Minors will play 4-game rounds, scoring by game (2 points for each win, 1 point for each draw.) Entry fees will be $50 (Master’s) / $30 (Majors) / $20 (Minors). ACF Membership is required to enter all divisions, and may be paid at registration.
The "Arthur Niederhoffer" National Youth Tournament (for 21 and under) will take place July 19 & 20.
Donations to our National tournament are welcome, and a donation of at least $20 will earn you a copy of annotated select games. Donations can go to Alan Millhone or Rich Beckwith, or to ACF Store / Donations/ ACF Tournament Fund Donation OR /ACF National Youth Tournament at http://www.usacheckers.com.

Non-announcement comments…I personally thank Gerry Lopez who submitted the only bid (for $2000) to ACF by the Dec. 31 deadline. I suspect some players may have hoped for a venue east of the Mississippi, but no one submitted a bid for this region. At this point, I don’t have details of hotel & room rates, other expenses, or referee, but Gerry Lopez was going to check with a few hotels once he secured the bid. Also, Gerry’s District 9 tournament will be played on July 27 & 28, so players may wish to consider supporting that event as well.
Our National Tournament honoree this year is Gene Lindsay. He was a past ACF Treasurer and frequent International Match Player, who placed 4th at the 2007 GAYP National. He recently left a large endowment to several checker organizations, and was a friend to many.

Great idea.rich beckwith wrote:Gene Lindsay
All roads are going to Las Vegas ! Welcome back and many thanks to Gerry who saved again National for us !rich beckwith wrote:Las Vegas July 21 through 25 (Masters might finish on 26th).
Step back. We had this requirement for Major Division in the past. Did ACF change policy or just gave up ?rich beckwith wrote: Recording of games and time clocks will be used in the Master’s group.
Just want to remind you that Gene Lindsay also was on Commitee which developed this wonderful, really tough deck !rich beckwith wrote:Masters will use a tough deck
It is pity that common sense is not apply to all our Divisions ! There is no such object as "game" in 3-moves, but "ballot" - best way for scoring 3-move events !rich beckwith wrote:The Majors and Minors will play 4-game rounds, scoring by game
It is growing ! Lets hope that entry fee will be as high as prices and quality of eventrich beckwith wrote:Entry fees will be $50 (Master’s)
Will they have $5,000 in price this year ?rich beckwith wrote:The "Arthur Niederhoffer" National Youth Tournament
It is always welcome. I can't remember when someone say - "donations are not welcome" !rich beckwith wrote:Donations to our National tournament are welcome
If I get a new comp in the next several months, I may participate in annotations (if ACF call me).rich beckwith wrote:, and a donation of at least $20 will earn you a copy of annotated select games.

Re: 2008 A.C.F. 3- Move Nationals & Youth Ty.
Good comments, Alex, and a few thoughts....Rules and entry fees are same as previous. I don't recall clocks in the Majors for several years, so not sure how and when this changed. As for scoring method for majors and minors, I'm not a big fan of 8-point rounds, but the majority of major & minors strongly wanted winner-take-all gone. I like the ballot scoring idea personally, but idea has not fared well historically in a couple surveys I once ran, but maybe this is due to unfamiliarity rather than the concept itself. If the Majors and Minors out there would like another change, perhaps a mail-in vote can be set up between now and July?

You probably right - I didn't play in 2007 GAYP Nationalrich beckwith wrote:entry fees are same as previous.
It is possible that we both are right and wrong on this issue. I think clocks never required completely 100% as MUST in Major Division, however recording games at least once was a MUST request (2003 or 2004).rich beckwith wrote:I don't recall clocks in the Majors for several years
Based on my experience - most of Major Division players can record the game ... and now it is only a question of preferences. Maybe voting just right before tournament would be a democratic way to solve / fix the problem last minute ?

I think so too. Most people just voted "against" old system (winner-take-all) but didn't realize that there are two new options.
Good idea, but voting just right before tournament, with two options on ballot also may work:rich beckwith wrote:If the Majors and Minors out there would like another change, perhaps a mail-in vote can be set up between now and July?
- score each game;
- score each ballot;
Again, many thanks to Mr. Gerry Lopez for saving our annual National Tourney. Yes, I am not a big fan for playing many times in the same location, but in other hands - I personally did nothing to change or improve this. And same about other complainers. At this point we should take what we have and be thankful for this.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Moiseyev

I may have missed this post earlier ...................and when i read it such was my dissapointment and for the good of the game i had to reply. One might say its not my business but here is my tuppence worth.
"(This will be a three-move restriction event using 156-opening deck and Swiss system)".
I think this is a truely backward step resticting the Ty to the old 156 deck,and may send out a negitive signal to all State Tys as well for some time to come, hence a delay in getting used to the now "real hard 3 movers".(that is the hard deck now)
At least the 174 mv deck should be in place in the Masters.
"(Recording of games and time clocks will be used in the Master’s group. (Players in other divisions are welcome to do the same, but optional). Clocks and scoresheets will be provided").
This is another step in the wrong direction unfortunately,as i recall majors were obliged to use clocks in the 2007 Ty and record.?
