King-Kondlo nmatch, predictions ?

Post by Ingo_Zachos »

Hallo everyone,

as we began to discuss the chances of the players at the WMSG, I suddenly realized that there is another highlíght coming up this year:
The GAYP WCM between defending Champion GM Ron King (Barbados) and Challenger GM Lubabalo Kondlo (South Africa).
My question is simple:
What do you predict?

For me it looks harder for Lubabalo Kondlo, as Ron King has the advantage of the title holder, that means Lubabalo Kondlo has to win. A tie would secure the titel for Ron King.
Their games in round 11 of last year's US National ended in two "solid" grandmaster draws.
But they may not be a real clue, as Kondlo only needed to draw to stay in front in that tournament.
Anyway, Ron King did not play for complications at all prices in that heat.
For instance he avioded the 1.11-15 22-18, 2.11x22 26x17 line he sprung on Nash and Holmes.
I think that is a clear sign that he regards his challenger as a serious opponent, and not as an easy point.
My prediction:
It will be very close. Kondlo has to find ways to complicate, and if King manages to score first, he will have it in his hands.
But if Kondlo magages to score first, we will see the pressure on Ron King, and I wonder if he is able to handle that.

So I rate King with a 51 % chance ,as he has the advantage of being the title holder.
Anyway, it will be much more interesting then the King-Francis matches or King-Morrison.

Greetinx from Germany,

Hello Everyone:

I will get Mr. Kondlo on the 30th. and he will be a guest in my home and then travel with me to Medina for the Ohio State Tournament the week-end before the 20 game King/Kondlo Match. Any of you who can come, should !! Play in the Ohio Tournament and then stay over for at least the first day of the match if you can. Regardless of the winner, the match I feel will be exciting and Mr. Kondlo I fell will use a variety of lines of play vs. Mr. King. I am sure Ron will be content with 20 draws and thus retian his title of some 19 years. It will be up to Lubabalo to be the 'mixer' in this match and introduce obscure lines of play he may have found and deeply analyized.

Hi all

Predictions are not really my thing and I would compare those who waste their time in doing so to star gazers or horoscope goofs, however as I am still on holiday for another week I will indulge (seriously)in this totally useless pastime also.

GAYP WCM - Result ; King does not have to win so Kondolo loses
IMSO - Tournement dominated by Scottish and Irish Grandmasters ( Probably Mc Cosker 2nd and Devlin 3rd, tie for 4th between King and Mosyeve due to very bad results against these British and Irish Grandmasters)

Greetings brother William,
Good luck in the tourney.
BUT,predicting a winner it is not a "useless pastime"......it's called fanaticism !!
It is the one thing that this game lacks !
I myself do not have to play Tennis to find a hero and stand behind him (or her).
I enjoy watching, and studying boxing.....I find my favorite and root for him (or her).
There are just certain people that I would like to see win.
In certain cultures, there is a very lucrative industry built around betting on, and winning (or losing)on your favorite, your own personal choice.
Just like finding a favorite team in any competitive endeavor, or rooting for the "home team".
To the person who is going to compete in this (Beijing) tournament, I wish him (or her) all the best.....but, I am throwing my hat in behind Alex M.
I believe he will win.
For King-Kondlo.....I'll wait to see if King shows up.
Again, best of luck to you William...!!!

Regards

Hi Tommy:

I like your message at the bottom of your post and I need to heed your admonition as at the Vegas Nationals it appears due to my lack of p.p. knowledge I may have missed a win or two :-) That is what keeps me average in the Checkered arena !

Tommy's book is a MUST in any Checker library and I highly recommend any of you three- move players to order a copy from Mr. Canning !

Not anymore.....money is just toooo hard to come by nowadays to gamble on whether or not somebody is having a good day at his/her craft.

I will (on the rare) bet on myself, or on something my own abilities might have some control over....such as recently, I had a 12 hour route scheduled at my job, I offered to bet my co-workers I could do it in 8...I got no takers.
But. NEVER again will I "BET" on someone else's competitive endeavors .....I'll be happy with making lame predictionsImageImage

To beat Ron he would have to be stronger than any other player that Ron has faced, including Alex, or he would have to play him on one of Ron's"offdays", which I would think are few and far between at GAYP so my money is on Ron to retain his title. I would guess at 2-0 to Ron.

There are 5 major components:

1) Published Play knoweldges.
2) Cross aboard skills.
3) Understanding the game.
4) Psychological form.
5) Phisical form.

If you are trying to find an answer (I don't! ) - who is going to win match or have better chances - you should go through this list of components, review it carefully and analyze.

I can say one thing only: I disagree with Ingo statement that match will be interesting. I don't think so.

Regards,

Alex
