Igor Martynov proposals - GM for top 10 in Beijing !

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

Hello folks !

Yesterday I had received email from Germany checkers Champion Igor Martynov. Along with other information, he had very interesting proposals, which I decided to share with you. His proposals seems very interesting and reasonable to me. In my opinion - it is still not late to have an emergency vote in WCDF and accept them, if WCDF administration belirve that this may raise and interest and respect to event, amd make competition more tough.

Below is portion of Igor email with his proposals.

Regards,

Alex

There is something else, I’d like to discuss. The Games in Beijing are the unique event and checkers fraternity have to use it. Nowadays in world championships only those players take part who can pay for it, but not the best (exactly to say all the best). I think it worth to make in Beijing more titles as three medals because only a few players can win them and I don’t believe that the newcomers have any chance. So I suggest to give the World Mind Games the special status and to make easier of winning the grandmaster title. For example – for the best 10 or so. It is also good for the competition because at least more then the half of all participants can fight for this honour aim.

==============================================================================================================================

If Igor proposals would be accepted, I can see immediately at least three candidates who will fight for very respectable GM title: Richard Beckwith, Shane McCoskey, Rawlie Allicock. But indeed, Igor is right in his predictions: fighing for the top 10 will affect approximately 20-25 players !

So far the commitee for titles and rating gave the GM title to the winner of the QT, and IM title and GM-norm for places two and three and IM-Norm and CM title for players that score 50 %, provided the event has more then 10 players and 6 with at least 2400 or GM-title.
But apart from Kondlo, all players that won a QT or played Top 3 were already at least IM.

As these conditions r fulfilled for Beijing, there will be at least quite a good chance for IM norms and CM titles.
But so far the WCDF did not have a QT that was so strong and has such a big attendance.
So we might really change on that, but most likely we will talk about that in Beijing, as apart from my friend Liam Stephens all members ofr the committee will be there.
Plus we will have a WCDF GA.
If the field is as impressive as it looks now, I personally tend to change the title awarding conditions for this special event, but plz notice that this event is the very first WMSG ever, and we had no idea of it when we established the rules.

So far the following GM r expected to play in Beijing:

1. GM William Docherty (UK)
2. GM Baghtiyar Durdyev (Turkmenistan)
3. GM Mustafa Durdyev (Turkmenistan)
4. GM Hugh Devlin (Ireland)
5. GM Jack Francis (Barbados)
6. GM Ronald King (Barbados)
7. GM Alexander Moiseyey (USA)
8. GM Jim Morrison (USA)

That's quite impressive.
Also a few IM's and CM's will play and Richard Beckwith (USA) and Rawle Allicock (UK) have already fulfilled one GM-norm and can get the title already under the current rules.

So I think this event will require a special status, but I can't tell you much more now.

I think that the top ten places (not in ary particular order) will be filled by King, Moiseyev, Doherty, Durdyev M, Durdyev B, Morrison, Devlin, Alicock, then either McCosker or Beckwith. The next 5 places should be interesting but de Grandis should not be underestimated, he is ranked #3 in Italy where all the tournaments are in the 3 move style and players such as de Grandis enter in the section that uses only the tougher openings. If he is as good at our form of the game as he is at the Italian style he would be a serious threat perhaps even to some of the the top 10 players. The same applies to the other Italian player Faleo, rated #10 in Italy, (which has a couple of thousand players) Hannigan and Durdyev P should take up the next places. The top 15 places will probably be filled by the above mentioned players. But there are many unknown (to most of us) players in the tournament who perhaps could create some shock results.
I look forward to receiving news of the results , should be one of the best 3 move tournaments ever.

OK, here are my 5 cents: I predict that in top 10 in Beijing there will be 3-4 new names not on this list ! This means that someone from this list wlll be down of top 10's ... no specific names.

I predict a good outcome (obviously higher than 50%) for Nikolai Abatziyev, Russian Checkers Grandmaster (since 1968 !), several time Soviet Union Champion and World Champion. He also was finished 3rd in ACF Major National in 1990 (Anglo-American style). Today he is in his prime 65's !

There will be none of the afore-mentioned in top 10 , all top players are playing very badly
at the moment , and losing in amaturish ways , or missing 1 move draws.
Shane M cosker will make 10th spot with the rest trailing behind.
This will be very good for the game and introduce new talents .

personally I will be happy with 15th place in this ty. and will probably be sufficient enough to
finish in front of the other ''top'' players.

This is only a preliminary point of view of course

Hello Alex I did not see Nikolai Abatziyev on the list he must have been a late entry. below is the line up that i copied from an earlier posting. The first column is the persons wcdf ranking the second their rating.
re the posting by William "There will be none of the afore-mentioned in top 10 , all top players are playing very badly at the moment , and losing in amaturish ways , or missing 1 move draws." a surprising statement to say the least lol surely not written by William Doherty ?.

Dear Woodpusher, this is an old list.

A newer one can be found on the tournamentbase at the WMSG website of the FMJD:
