THINGS LOOK BAD
THINGS LOOK BAD
Hi All
After having sent my passeport to John Reade , for visa obtention in UK ; as informed by Mr Macaux and French based Chinese embassy , we were told that it had to be done locally ie. for me it would be Paris , and Myles ,,,,Edinburgh !!!!
John swiftly posted my passeport and all info ,last Thursday from England by recorded delivery . The British postal services handed it over to the french on the Friday ,,and since then it has ....disapeared.
Considering the time it will take to obtain visa ( all going well ... and providing I recieve documents sent) I am seriously doubting my chances of being able to attend .
No ones fault for sure ; and no complaints ,, I'm just a bit pissed off about this bit of bad luck ,, that's all it is
Greetings from rainy Paris

Re: THINGS LOOK BAD
William, Russian's don't trust anyone!
And especially I don't trust that I have any luck at all !!!
Richard Beckwith did things similar to yours: packed everything in package, filled out application and sent it by Federal Express overnight service to New York Chinese consulate office. Hope everything will be OK for him.
I, personally, don't trust mail and was afraid to send passport and invitation letter getting things out of my control.
I travelled on my own from Columbus to New York last Sunday, leaving 10 AM and coming on 9 PM, stayed over the night in my old son appartment. On Monday I visited Chinese consulate office in New York (rush service - extra $30), got visa around 4 PM and at 3 AM Monday I was back to Columbus and back to work at 8 AM.
Huh ... not an easy deal in my almost 50's. But I have now in my hands passport, tickets and visa.
William - I wish you good luck and not only in the tourney !!!
Regards,
Alex

Thanks Alex ,
The future is not in my hands right now ; now the dice will decide.
Since the beginning I suspect something could go wrong , because like you , I believe in trusting nothing that could possibly swing out of my control.
I did nothing to avoid it , and may finally pay the price.
I hope that Richard has no problems ; thanks for your support

Dear William,
we still have two weeks to go and an express visa can be made within one day, so your chances r still very good.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, and don't forget..

Re: THINGS LOOK BAD
Thanks, Liam ! First time I read Murthy laws on Russian about 30-35 years ago. Nothing really changed since them - all of them were proved well many times in many generations. This one is my favor:
6. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
There are also some interpretation of Murthy Laws, which can be well apply to checkers:
1) If there are two wins in position, one is always draw.
2) Any move which you are going to make is wrong.
3) The number of bad moves in every position = N+1, where N - number of bad moves you've seeing plus the move which you are willing
to make.
4) Every weak player plays at least one good game in the tournament, and more likely his opponent in this game will be you.
5) If your opponent knows well only one opening from 156 and study only one line in this opening on the day before the game - more likely it will be the line which you choose.
6) Any time you have a choice of moves, you pick up a wrong one.
7) Any referee always has a very weak experience, don't understand game, details and rules, and his decision is always wrong in favor of your opponent.
I propose other forum members extend this list. William input is especially wanted and appreciated
Regards,
Alex

Re: THINGS LOOK BAD
William, time to leave bad news behind !
Any updates regards your missing passport ? Remember, sometimes in such cases (losses/stolen) you can obtain temporairly passport or travel document. To get visa you may need just one day if invitation letter or it's copy is available. I really hope to see you in Beijing - NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE !
Regards,
Alex
