Re: WMSG in progress !
In last round 9 I drawed 2 games with William Docherty and finished with 27 points, and William - 22. Ron King won his first game against Israilian Michael Shabshai and Mustafa drew his first game with Latvian player and now they both have to play 2nd game having same number of points.
Ron King was the only one who was picked from 6 top players for doping control.
Stay on for more news.

Alex

Re: WMSG in progress !
Congrats to Gold medal winner Alex who won in a canter without losing a round,Billy Doherty(Scotland) also put in a brave attempt also not losing a round the only two to do so in the whole contest.
Hugh Devlin (20)was the fastest finisher after a poor start and Jim Morrison(21) made a valient effort despite losing the 1st rd 4-0.Shane McCosker(19) did us proud only losing in the entire week to Alex and Ron( both 3-1) ending up with 189 honor pts and Garett Owens Ire (20). finished on just 3pts off the mark.
Raivis Paegle (Latvia)(23) lost the first 2!!rds.......going 0,0,3,4,4,2,4,3,3.finising level points with Ron King (23)in second was just an amazing performance by him ,apparently now living in Ireland.Perhaps now is the time for a re-think and change the GB/IRE V USA match to a Rest of the World v USA........Or maybe Team Europe v USA as the USA have dominated this comp for so many years?.
Wel done to everyone now ive gotta rush off ,going to a wedding cya all at the Irish Open.

Alex Moiseyev WINS GOLD!

Impressive win by Moiseyev
by wmsg-draughts on October 17, 2008

Alexander Moiseyev meets Vladimir Ptitsyn, president of the FMJD
The checkers tournament ended just after the regular 9th round, there was no need for play-offs. Alexander Moiseyev (USA) won in a very convincing way, having scored 4 points more then runner-up Ronald King from Barbados. Raivis Paegle took the bronze home to Latvia.
Checkers is my family
by wmsg-draughts on October 17, 2008

Alexander Moiseyev enjoyed the World Mind Sports Games and not only because he won the checkers 3-move competition. He absolutely enjoys seeing old friends with whom he lost all contact after his emigration from the Soviet Union to the USA. According to a Russian saying ‘you cannot cross a river twice’. ‘This catching up with old friends feels almost as if I am crossing the river again, though’ the five times world champion in checkers 3-moves says.
Moiseyev began to play draughts on the 64 square board when he was 7 years old. He switched to the 10×10 international draughts in the late seventies and became a master in this international mind sport. When he left the Soviet Union in 1991, he was ranked 17th on the FMJD rating list. He did not play for 5 years and restarted in 1996. Shortly after his restart he got aware that there would not be a future for him in the 10×10 game. He then decided to have his second emigration… from 10×10 to checkers. In the USA checkers is considered to be a kids game, but Moiseev is fighting against that prejudice. ‘It is really sport’, he says.
Switching to the checkers game was not an easy solution, but Moiseyev took the consequences: learning the rules, new tactics and strategies. Of course he benefits from his 10×10 draughts background: the process of organizing, calculating and strategic formations are more or less the same. Moiseev still studies checkers for 2 or 3 hours per day. He plays any tournament in the US when it is within the reach of an 8 hour drive from his home. All together he plays 180 games a year. He loves doing it, the checkers world is like a nice family.
Congratulations Alex... "Pal"

Re: WMSG in progress !
Thankyou John.Congratulations to you Alex. There is no mention who is the contender for the 3 move round next year with Amangel. Both Patricia and the Mongolian girl finished on 16,but the Mongolian girl had higher honour points, does that mean she will play next year?

Re: WMSG in progress !
Can someone confirm that Alex is the only one to win a medal for the USA, and possibly all of North America? Also, didn't Mr. King take home the silver?
Someone call Colbert and tell him that USA won a medal and get Alex on the Colbert Report! Give checkers the Colbert bump! WOOO!
You can see his coverage of the WMSG here:

Re: WMSG in progress !
Congratulations To David Eades from New Zealand who has never played in an international match before, and scored 16 points. We are all proud of him, considering he plays mainly on the internet, with no clubs around to play in.Well done DAvid.
Re: WMSG in progress !
Hello everyone
Well I'm back at base after another 10 hour flight and when I left Alex in the bar friday night he told me he would be back round this time too.
The ty was fantastic , with very very unknown strong players from all over world in this checker ty , no one had an easy time.
I played Amangul in the ty . and although i missed a one move win , I would say that she is seeing right and will be untouchable champion for next 5 years .
BHagtiyar had a fine ty also and I would say that he and mustafa were unlucky not to reach the podium , whatevevr anyone says.
I had a bad ty. playing almost perfect midgames , but missing 1 move wins against allicock . amangul; king ; bashim durdyev and Moisyev in first game ,,, in the late midgame ::early endgame stages.
in fact if i take my win ( it was only a 4 or 5 move thing) against alex then i would have silver!!
Now it will be interesting to analyse how true the rating system is!!
Strip off all unrated players and study wcdf ratings compared to results of all in ty ,just to see if we can make an assessement of what theory said , what actually happened , and for how long down the theoretical list... just an idea
to see if the initial shuffling on list is over or if there is more to come.
Well done to all participents ; thanks for the many games and will be seeing you all.
Here is descisive game against alex
black docherty white alex
10 15 23 19 7 10 when we pulled ballot i said shit ; alex said ''bad luck'' and offered 2 draws. I told him i need 3 points
and despite opening must play.. 2218 x x 1014 2723 1116 2925 1620 3127 811 1916 1219 237 1423 2619 211
2522 610 2217??? 37 (the move alex missed) 3026 16 2622 913 1612 711 2723 x 1814 69( once again as i did in this ty 5 times i pass by win ; proving that regular ty play is necessary ) i offer draw.
INSTEAD of 69 ;;;2731 x 2630 72 3025 ( 69 does not work ) x 2518 then 1714 and take two kings to pick up man.
I will try to publish some more game s later , notably my win against king , and the win i miss in first game with king
greetings to all

Re: WMSG in progress !
Hello William, congratulations on your fine performance, Yes there were some very strong unknowns in the tournament, although I suspect not so unknown in their cown ountry, Paegle, for example played in the 1999 London MSO where he played very strongly. The Italian players are both very strong at the Italain game ( and also at our game it would seem). I believe that the next Olympiad will be in London in 2012. Alex must be congratulated on his superb performance, beating Ron and Jim twice is no mean feat. I would be interested in seeing the games between paegle and Mustapha!. What will happen to all of the scoresheets? will the games be published?.
Re: WMSG in progress !
ian caws has copies of all games and there is talk of trying to find some on e to annotate games in a book

Re: WMSG in progress !
Hi tommy
I had for my part against amangul durdyev 1015 2319 913 ;; in first game she probably did not play best moves and I took over attack but she picked the right moves ( she is very good x board player) to get her draw and in second game , i had a caculated win about 15 to 20 moves ahead and on last move let her slip away.' ( as i did too often in this ty) this was not interesting defense as after 6x15 i play 2218cut and then she cut also 1115??
I am still jet lagged but will post my games later
By for now

Re: WMSG in progress !
The "Garter Snake" milder relative of the now banned Rattlesnake, with correct play Black appears to be presented with few real endgames difficulties,in my book i have it 913 2319 1015xx so maybe its been changed.
Yes wat yus played is ok and one of the main lines maybe 2218 attack not best, but par for the course Billy.
