Re: WCDF beat the record !
Agreed! How on earth did the hotels get away with that? Sounds like a textbook case of breach of contract to me!
Hmm doesn't that mean that the other players are on the street as well? at any rate this is bad news for checkers. This is certainly very good news for all other players, because kicking off few Americans makes competition easy![]()
very few things suprise me but i have to admit this one comes close.Every time when I think I know everything about checkers and our lovely World Federation (WCDF) - I find out that my knowledges are still miserable and not enough. The reality always is much more richer than any science fiction story !!!
im sure a backup plan of some sort will be in place soon.

Re: WCDF beat the record !
I think the problem has been overstated here (unintentionally). As far as I know, none of our players had their pesonal reservations canceled after reservations were made. It is true that there are other festivities going on the preceding weekend before the tournament on Isle of Wight. As a result, few hotel rooms are available on the preceding weekend only (on the entire island), and no rooms were available at the preferred hotels near where we will play. As a result, the organizers moved the event from Monday-Thursday to Tuesday-Friday to address this. There are plenty of available rooms from Tuesday into the weekend after the tournament. The preferred Dorset hotel has since been "booked up" on Monday night, but other nearby options are still available, the last time I checked. The one drawback is that it is difficult for someone to arrive several days early for sight-seeing reasons. Apparently a block of rooms was never reserved in advance, but maybe that's not an option there? Also, Joe Schwartz withdrew for reasons unrelated to the hotel problem. Kim and John did express concerns about the room availability to me, but had other personal reasons to withdraw as well.

My fault. I had erased all my posts in this topic and renamed it.

Re: WQT 2009
With several erased posts it is difficult to follow this thread, but it seems to involve a STREET SCENE,
which reminded me of a few examples.
THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE
I have often walked down this street before;
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am I Several stories high.
Knowing I'm on the street where you live.
People stop and stare. They don't bother me.
For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

Re: WQT 2009
For those traveling to Isle of Wight, Ian Caws told me that a train is available from Gatwick airport to Portsmouth Harbour, which is a short ferry ride (15 min. catamaran) from Isle of Wight. However, if you fly into Heathrow, the train option is not available (perhaps one could taxi to Gatwick or another train stop). A roundtrip taxi from Heathrow to Porstmouth Harbor will run ~100 pounds.

Re: WQT 2009
I think you might be better off getting a train from Heathrow into London, and then a train from London to Portsmouth. The Heathrow train takes you to Paddington. You then travel on the underground to Waterloo where the Portsmouth trains go from.
