Thanks for the update. Can you start putting my son's first initial in front of his name each time?

New IN State champion - local and very good player Kenny Miller, 17 points. His brother, Jerry Miller (3rd place) and Pal Bucker (4th place) also got 17 points. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to play with Palomino, otherwise he would definetely have more points.

I've got prize money $160, and Kenny, Jerry and Pal splitted prices and each got $40.

Nice place, nice people, lovely friendly atmosphere. I will post later few games.

Having red pieces with Alex Holmes, I played successfully Michael Holmes (!) cook 2-6 in opening 11-15 22-17 9-13 (covered in Sixth, SG-45).

Regards,

Alex

I had a great time, I think everyone did.
It was Indiana Amish country, some came by car, one by bus, one by bicycle and some came by buggy.

3rd place finsher Jerry Miller on the left. Lonnie Lambright on the right.

Many thanks to Roger Blaine (holding score sheet) for organizing and directing the tournament. As always he did a great job.

Great job Alex and congratulations. WOW!
A near perfect score OF 27 points out of a possible 28.
Hum.. the only player to score a point against Alex was John Acker.
I wonder if Alex made John ride in the back seat on the way home?

I want to thank my good friends Ed Lucas and his son Phil for letting me
hitch a ride, otherwise there would have been one player that came by walking!

Image

Hey Ed, put it back you can't take that home!

We played on the 3rd floor of the Davis Mercantile building.

Alex, that is very funny. Ed Lucas will fall out of his chair when I tell him what you wrote!

Hey Josh, I like that idea.

Indiana has the "Indiana Champion's Checker Board(s)" listing the names of our champions all the way back to the late 1890s. Were it not for these champion's boards that history would pretty much be lost.

The old board.

New board.

me2. It is also make sense, if you track "year" and display it. Some titles are running and changed every year, but sometimes we don't have a new Champions for years and it is important to understand the whole picture.

Another good historians and sources are ICHF (Charles Walker) and Al Darrow. Count them to get more detail information.

That board has changed as my name was on the last square. Any explanations? and my name was the first on the new board. Perhaps someone disagreed with this.

Many games, sports, etc. keep track of things like this.

A game with a history is more prestigious and receives more respect.
This reminds me of an old saying:

“Those living nearest to the Church are often the farthest away from God”

Quite amazing that no-one would have bothered to consult checkers historian Jay H living on their own doorstep, with his mass of historical information as well as the records compiled by Earl Hangen over many years.

Incidentally, Jay is not allowed to post on the Forum any longer for some unknown reason.

I know I have not won the title (although I have won the tournament in 2004) since 2003 as I moved to KY in late 2003. But yes, there were several years but on both boards. Apparently the person who had control of the board took my name off the first board. I bought the second board as my name went on the last square of the first board so I felt sort of obligated to buy the second board.

Josh Armstrong wrote:I updated the Roster with the new champions. I have an idea, if it's not too much trouble. I think on the Roster of Champions page, each title should be linked to another page with the history of title changes. For example, you can click on "AL" you would see all the past champion players listed by years. We could do this for all of them, but maybe some of the UK titles might be infeasible. I think this would add a nice legacy to checkers.
Ahh you read my mind. I've been working on trying to consolidate players from the ACF tournaments (i.e. Donnell Guy has 4 different ways of spelling his name on different tournaments) which has given me a lot of time to think. This is a much needed feature and I'm glad others think so too.
My current plan is to also dedicate a "page" to each player, so you can click on their name and get their tournament history, title history, etc. I would also incorporate a similiar feature for each state/district (show the tournaments played that state, the past champions, etc).
The name cleanup is my highest priority right now because it will take the most time. After I clean that up (hopefully the end of the week, i'm on the L's right now) I'll get this setup for title history.

Josh Armstrong wrote:Well, to prevent these variation couldn't we assign ACF-ID numbers? We could standardize the tournament process with a program. Tournament directors would have access to these programs. When a player enters an ACF-Sanctioned tournament, they have to provide their ACF-ID number. The tournament director will input the ID numbers into the program, choose the style of tournament and other options, and the computer will generate the pairings. After the tournament is over, the program can send a director the tournament results. It can be processed, results posted, ratings updated, the player's pages updated.

The database can also contain the player's current residence and other essential information such as current contact information. E-mails can be sent out for any notifications, such as an expired membership...etc.

If we did that, a player can see which opponents and which tournaments he played in. Of course we could have different privacy options if the person doesn't want to reveal this information. Personally I think the biggest problem is the variations resulting from names, reporting, & tournament announcements.

Thats more or less the overall plan, but baby steps come first. My biggest problem in the past was trying to tackle many things at once and subsequently accomplishing nothing.
