Hello,
I'm trying to compile a list of possible titles to make it easier/more consistent to display winners and winner history.
My question is this:
My original thought is that each state/district could have a champion for each style of play, i.e.
District 1 3-Move Champion
District 1 GAYP Champion
District 1 11-Man Champion
etc.
However I've noticed that very few states hold separate tournaments for GAYP and 3-Move (let alone 11-Man). They only have 1 champion.
Should the winner be displayed as GAYP State champion (if it was a GAYP tournament) or just State Champion? Should both be listed?
Just looking for some direction from the community on this.

Re: Titles help/suggestions
Jason, use "3-moves" as default and if you say "Champion" that means - 3-moves champion. If some state have GAYP champion - you have to specify this and say "GAYP Champion".
I don't know much about 11-man ballot, but some states also have Ladies and Youth titles.

Yes, match is seperate from "normal" (tournament) champion.
The list will grow/shrink as necessary I'm just looking for a good starting spot.
As it looks right now I've set it up so there are 3 different ways to "modify" a championship.
Type of game (3-move, gayp, etc)
Type of match (match play, tournament)
Category (Men,Women,Youth,etc)
All of these apply to what amount to locations:
World,National,District,State
Not everything fits into this mold though, there are also international matches and the like.
I know very few tournaments qualify their titles as "Men's" championship, but I do recall seeing some tournaments (world qualifier?) where they distinctly separate the groups of players.

Re: Titles help/suggestions
I've never known of any tournament where youth or women were not allowed to enter. I have seen remarks, such as, "Alex Moiseyev is the Men's World 3-Move Champion" or something to the likes of that which is totally wrong. Alex Moiseyev is the "3-Move World Champion", gender nor age have nothing to do with it. Alex is just plain and simple the best human at 3-move checkers/draughts. Youth and women are in no way restricted from playing in a world qualifying tournament and when the time comes that a youth or woman enters and wins a world qualifying tournament he or she gets to play Alex or Ron King for their respective world title.Jason wrote:

I think that in the not so far off future Indiana will have a youth as Indiana State Champion (Alex Holmes) and when that time comes he will be the " Indiana State Champion" and because of his age, he will also be Indiana "State Youth Champion" which he already is.
In a perfect world I would like to see every district have in addition to a "District Champion" separate titles for "District Youth Champion" and "District Ladies Champion" for each style of play, GAYP, 3-Move, 11-Man and maybe even Suicide.
The down side of this will be that if we list all of these titles in the "Roster of Champions" there will be a lot of "vacant" titles.
I also believe each state should work to have, in addition to a "State Champion" separate titles for "State Youth Champion" and State Ladies Champion". We should do everything possible to encourage more youth and women to get involved!
You can add "Match Champions" to the list also.

Re: Titles help/suggestions
I agree with that, except, often the "State Champion" comes from a lower division because, as often happens, states without separate state tournaments get their champions from district tournaments and these states often don't have any players in the Master's division. It all takes care of it's self by naming the highest placing player from each state "State Champion" of his or her state and it goes without saying that a player in the Master's division takes higher placement over players in lower divisions.John wrote:
I think any titles should be limited to competitors in the Masters division.
This was the sort of situation we had in Indiana in past years where District 6 and the Indiana State Tournaments are combined. Ron Bailey played in the the Masters division and all other Hoosiers played in the Majors division, so Ron was automatically named "Indiana State Champion".

Re: Titles help/suggestions
I appreciate the suggestions. I could've sworn I've seen the WQT advertised as the "Men's World Qualifying Tournament", but I admit I haven't paid much attention to the checker world in a while.
I only plan on listing titles if they at some point had a champion, so therefore we wouldn't see a large list of "Vacant" titles, except maybe in 2-Move since that isn't used anymore. I guess I could even go so far as to make each title "Active" and only show the inactive one's on a historical page.
Again thanks for the ideas. If the weather is poor tomorrow I plan on spend some time getting this all up and running. I'm actually looking forward to working on this as it gives me a chance to finally start to re-design the site by starting with a small section.

Yeah, I forgot about 2-Move and Simultaneous Play, who would that be, Charles Walker? Someone also mentioned the Blindfold Champion title. Does anyone know who held that title last was it Newell Banks? I guess we could come up with more titles if we keep scratching our heads.
Jason, Thanks for what you do..."Pal"

What about taking our online players with us and creating a "1 min World Champion" ,or a 5 min WC....who would be for that??

On nc checkers site I've tried to recognize the youth and women who finished highest in their respective division or class. When I display the crosstable or scoresheet summary I did this for Indiana, North Carolina, and Tennessee. If we want to promote youth and women then we need to recognize them.
