In the 2nd round Alan made some nice moves to trap some of my men in a corner while being man down. It was a long game and I feel so very out of practice playing against these guys. But it still feels good to play again and see some people I haven't seen in several years.

Alex trounced me in 2 games (both sides of the Black Hole). Even when in my head I'm thinking I'm getting close to a draw position, he's 20 moves ahead of me smoking a victory cigarette.

I think Alex and Alan will play in the next round. So far nobody has even drawn Alex.

Tommy, I heard a rumour. Is it true that within the velvet pages of the new edition of your book there is a major "cook" that is fatal. (If you see it coming, better step aside)

No, just the standard 156 deck-- luck of the draw, I suppose. So far I know we've had the Inferno, the Black Hole, and the Black Widow. On the Inferno, Cowie and I both played the 25-22 11-15 24-19 attack, though since then I've discovered (from ID booklets and some online research) that those are apparently well-known lines. I believe this is the line he played to beat me:

1. 9-13 22-18 2. 10-14 18x9 3. 5x14 25-22 4. 11-15 24-19 (1) 5. 15x24 28x19 6. 6-10 22-18 7.
1-5 18x9 8. 5x14 29-25 9. 8-11 25-22 10. 11-15 32-28 11. 15x24 28x19 12. 4-8?? loses in both games

Our first game was a draw:

(1).the 2419 attack transposes into the regular op....9-13 24-19 10-14.

Cannings Comp……
1. 9-13 22-18 2. 10-14 18x9 3. 5x14 25-22 4. 11-15 24-19 5. 15x24 28x19 6. 6-10 22-18 7.
1-5 18x9 8. 5x14 29-25 9. 8-11 25-22 10. 11-15 32-28 11. 15x24 28x19 12. 4-8 ???????

..........32-28, (V2)15x24, 28x19,(V3) 14-17** ETC

( (Off trunk)Beware of the natural 4-8? after 28-19 jump at previous move only 14-17** DRS

4-8?? 22-18**, 14-17, 21x14, 10x17, 18-14*..(19-15 drs),(2) ...............7-10, 14x7, 3-10, 19-16, 12x19, 23x16, 8-11 16x7, 2x11, 26-23, 10-14, 23-19, 17-22, 27-24, 14-17, 24-20, 17-21, 19-16, 11-15, 16-11, 22-25, 11-7, 25-29, 7-2, 29-25, 2-6, 25-22,610,Red to move and lose versus D.John of Wales 98 Brit Masters

(2)John you cut 26-22 here with draws..............Louie took the proper 18-14*

to put it In this context……….4-8** is starred only after the 27-20 jump!!

JohnAcker wrote:Thanks for the analysis, Tommy. I must admit I didn't seriously consider 17-14 during the game, since I was focused on the various shots on the board, but other games I studied also suggests that you're right. Good to know the transposition as well.
I take it you mean 14-17......true it doesnt look natural but then these openings tend to be like that, where the natural move is the loser which is why prior knowledge is essential. This may explain why the first of my books were actually bought by world champions Ron and Alex.

I played Black Hole opening with Jason Solan and won both games. In first game, having a weak side of opening, Jason jumped 7x14 and lost it soon. In second game, when I played a weak side, we had more fun game.

[Event "OH State Checkers Tourney, Rd3, G2"]
[Date "September 12, 2009"]
[Black "A. Moiseyev"]
[White "J. Solan"]
[Result "2-0"]

1. 10-14 22-17 2. 9-13 17x10 3. 6x15 24-19 (A) 4. 15x24 28x19 5. 1-6 26-22 (B) 6. 7-10 30-26 7. 3-7 22-18 (C) 8. 11-15 18x11 9. 8x24 27x20 10. 4-8 23-18 (D) 11. 6-9 32-28 12. 8-11 28-24 13. 9-14 18x9 14. 5x14 26-23 15. 10-15 23-19 16. 7-10 25-22 17. 2-6 29-25 18. 14-18 21-17 19. 18-23 17-14 20. 10x26 19x1 21. 26-30 25-22 22. 30-26 22-18 23. 26-22 18-14 24. 23-27 1-6 25. 27-32 6-2 26. 22-18 14-9 27. 11-15 (E) RW

White to move, black wins
Image

A) Ron King played this attack against me with success in 3-moves WCM, 2005.

B) Indeed, 23-18 instead 26-22 here is a superior, strong move which forces black to make all star moves after then to secure a draw.

C) Quite unacceptable. After 26-22 at note B position was equalize, but after this move black has advantage. White should play 32-28 before 22-18 to prevent "out of center" jump 27-20.

D) Loses! See diagram after 6-9.

E) Very interesting and instructive cross aboard game. Isn't an amazing fact that position on diagram is lost for white ?!

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE

Ahhhhh , so D John was there before me !!!

Actually in my
2000 Elimination match against Alex , we had the same ending from 913 2419 1014 and after I play 2218 Alex went 610 into that 4-8 loss that you mention.

The ending was slightly different played byAlex , but came to this with black Alex to play.

Image

13-17 !? A( and he calls the forty move rule! I studied the board carefully and saw this beautiful win from this point on) 11-7
25-22 7-10 22-25 10-14 25-22 14-9 24-28 9-13 28-24 15-11 !!! 24-28 (24-19 would get 31-27) 31-27!!! beautiful manoeuver , 28-32 27-24 32-28 ( of course forced to lose a tempo due to 32-27 11-15 x 15-19 ww) 24-20 28-24 11-15 and Alex resigned courageously... White Win

A.This move is not as illogical as it first seems to be, and was well played by Alex who was fighting for survival in this ending. The reason being that although a handicaping move in most cases , in this instance gives the black kings the "move" on the white kings with hopes of breaking free if white tries to herd the single through for a king . it almost works and an endgame idea to keep in mind , yet another exception to rules in checkers!!

Willaim, we played our match in 2001,not 2000 - please, don't make me older than I am

I find this fact about ending I lost you 4 years (ha-ha !) after our match, but also 4 years before this post  ... somewhere in 2005 when new openings came in and I recognised this position. Since then I already won a tons of games whem people played 4-8 on me. I also had a chance to play 14-17 to draw at least 2 times on serious occasion.
