Cheers Lindus ,

Since I got back from Scottish , I have been in VERY serious study trying to iron out the many imperfections in my game as I was not pleased by my performance at the Scottish or Beijing .( 2 hours in the morning , 4 in the evening except weekends when it is more !! Reminds me of my teenage days , when all I did was study too!! ) Unfortunately I must work for survival  and any wealthy sponsors wishing to sponsor a small hope are welcome

The world title is my goal and I am working all out to dethrone my old enemy Alex :D

thanks for your support Lindus

Little or no news is coming out. Seems to be all very hush, hush. - the velvet touch I guess. :)

And, no word of any forfeitures.

Hi William,
The fact is that you have many supporters out there. I am just one of them :D It has been my wish to see you play Alex for the world title for some time now. When the match is on I will be the first in line to contribute to it.
With best wishes always,
Lindus.

Hi Liam,
No word of any forfeit as yet??? Now that is strange...........

Very much looking forward to seeing you at the Welsh Open next week, and indeed to see you winning it. Here's hoping you have a comfortable and safe journey here.
With best wishes always,
Lindus.

Greetings Alex.....

YES !!! :!: :!:
I learned my lesson after the last scheduled 3-Move WCM (albeit on my part a very small contribution)...I will not contribute to a match until I KNOW the match is underway.
That is why I have waited to contribute to any match...(with the exception of your recent match with Laverty...which I did contribute to beforehand because JR called me personally)...

And, when I do contribute to your upcoming match, my stipulation will be.....
$50.00 (all I can afford at this time,...don't tell the wife...)seperate and aside from the general fund, TO THE WINNER !!!!!!
Even before your request...this was my plan...!!!! Wasn't sure how well (or if !?!?) this would be accepted...but, it should be now !!!

Although I can honestly state that I have never played through the games of your match with Docherty...it seems, from looking at the score, your had a very tough time of it... :?: :?:
Looking forward to this match-up, as well as your upcoming match with Ron King !!!!

Hi Alex,
I am confident that you will be successful in the defense of your world title against Ron. But so many I have spoken with are hopeful of seeing you play William once again, since your last match was so close. Personally I prefer to see the donations split 60/40.
As we are discussing word championship matches I feel that the ladies should receive the same level of respect and indeed money as the gentlemen. Some might disagree, but I think most people (men and women) would agree with me.
Best wishes,
Lindus.

So, William may not yet be the “King” though well on the way, no doubt. The WCDF rules do not preclude a private challenge and I also would wish to be a contributor to such a match. Who knows ?, a subscription match might be in the offing and would save William from all those tedious preliminaries of entering a QT with all its associated ill run Swiss System possibilities.

In the recent QT the following occurred:

After 4 rounds the scores stood as follows:

S.Mc Cosker - 11 points
J, Morrison - 11 points
F. Bednall - 11 points
P. Faleo - 10 points
The rest on 9 points or lower.

Mc Cosker had already played Morrison and Faleo, the other 3 had not met.

Therefore the correct and only draw for the 5th round was as follows, with no dropping down:

Mc Cosker v Bednall
Morrison v Faleo

Instead Morrison was drawn against Bednall and McCosker and Faleo had to drop down the table to
play the 9 pointers. Tut – tut !

In the 8th and final round there was another debacle when R. Beckwith on 17 points was drawn against J. Jolliff on 9 points, when he could and should have played F. Bednall also on 17 points.

Liam,

The correct order after 4 rounds based on Sonneborn-Berger points was:-

1. J. Morrison 11 94
2. S. McCosker 11 83
3. F. Bednall 11 77
4. P. Faleo 10

Morrison had played McCosker in Round 3 so was therefore paired against the next player in the list, namely Bednall.

By round 8 it had got to the stage where you have to work up from the bottom as well as down from the top. If Jolliff had not been paired against Beckwith he would have to have been paired against players even higher in the list.

John, Berger should be "second criteria", no doubts ! Maximum compress pairing should be first, because this is basic Swiss law and rule. Otherwise - it is not a Swiss system.

If tournament reglamentation says - Swiss system, then it says everything. Anything else - just fantasy only. Pairing goes from points, not Berger. Also, pairing always done from top to bottom.

Alex,

The basic rule for the Swiss system is that players with equal scores or nearly equal scores should be paired in the following round. There is no consensus as to the details.

I rank ordered players at the end of each round by game points and SB pomits. And then paired off 1v2, 3v4, etc as closely as possible. This was my interpretation of the basic rule.

Your concept of 'maximum compress' is far too vague to give a detailed procedure for making the pairings.

You have to work up from the bottom as well as down from the top. It is when the top down demands clash with the bottom up demands that you get problems. This happens from the halfway point of the round robin onwards.

Dear friends,

in a tournament as close as this with the top players as close in strenghts as that, it is useless to point out that the swiss system is to blame.
In my mind Richard was lucky, but the rules were set from the beginning and the chances were equal and fair.
He was the primus inter pares, but any other that would have won it would not be anything more.
Also, a verdict solely based on the results of the last round, and not on the games played in the last round is quite misleading.

Richard Beckwith won, but others were close to winnig it as well.
Let's leave it that way.

Others had their chances, but for some reason failed narrowly.
I don't really believe that the pairings were manipulated or that anyone lost on purpose.

And only that would be a reason to doubt the result.

My congratulations for the deserved winner, Richard Beckwith, and good luck for his match against Ron King.

Greetinx from sunny Dortmund,

Ingo Zachos

P.S:
Swiss system has the idea to pair first half on the same points against the second half on the same points.
If this is impossible due to an odd number on the same points (see above) or that it would need repairing, as the players on the same number of points have already played aginst each other, then we need "uppairing" or "downpairing".
It depends on the other pairings what has to be done and there is no general rule, except that downpairing allows more scope for future pairings on the same number of points and is thus slightly preferred, or you can end up with a last round and no pairing is possible without repairing in the lower half of the table.
Those who have played online events in which swiss system is often programmed , for simplicity, with "uppairing", then the event is often stopped one or two rounds before the scheduled number of rounds, as no pairings are possibe anymore at all!
This danger is increasing with low numbers of participants, and 16 is quite low.
