Nice 5x5 Ending (or the amazing 10pc database)

Post by dahliag »

I recently found out of the possibility to query Chinook's 10 piece database and decided to check out some positions that I had in some recent games. And I was amazed about my findings.

For instance I checked the following position in which I felt I had missed a win somewhere. However I was stunned that the position was a white win, and there is only one way to win, giving it a problem-like property.

So White to play and win.

30-26 2-7 (2-6? 18-14!) 26-22!! {I played 32-27 here, although winning a checker temporarily this piece will be regained by the future black king } 7-11 (10-14 18-15 14-18 22-17! 13x22 28-24) 21-17 11-16 {and now the pitch: } 18-15 10x19 1-6! WW

A nice, sharp win I think.

Hi there ,

Concerning your first position ... This is very interesting position , but unfortunately for you ( I will have to check this out , but I am almost certain at 99% ) this position has already been published !!! I can tell you it was most certainly published by Oldbury ( again 99% certainty ) however I cannot recall if it was in his enyclopedia of the game of draughts ; or if it was in his publication Move Over ... I do not recall that he gave a run-up so your runup would be very very interesting to see !!! Thanks for sharing this with us , as it is a nice position and the idea (especially at 26-22!!!) is very useful, the proof being that that is the reason I recognised the position :D :D

Interesting to learn that it is a known position.

I have the game leading to the position at a machine at home. However I don't think you will find it interesting.
First of all: I am not an expert at the game.
Second: the game was just a quick game against a weak table top machine (Saitek) and varied at some points in the game to avoid getting the same game over and over again.

I used this particular position to test the waters with the database as I remembered it as it was the last game I played .
