Alberta Bailey, 1918-2009

Post by Lisle Cormier »

My grandmother, Alberta Bailey, passed away due to complications from DLB on Tuesday morning, November 24, 2009, at the age of 91. My family will sorely miss this great woman's spunk, wisdom, charm, and dignity. The many hours of checkers I played with her will always be a fond memory. She was the first to teach me many things.

Our Trophies at Last We Lay Down. I love you, Grandma.

Frances Alberta Bailey, a remarkable lady, dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at her home in Augusta, Ga. She was 91. Mrs. Bailey was born to Enoch and Lilla Cardin, October 15, 1918, in Porterdale, Ga. and grew up in Griffin. She was married to Roy James Bailey for 63 years until his death in 1999. They lived in Patillo, Ga. for a time but most of their years were in Griffin. She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Cormier and husband Rene of Augusta, Ga., Ann Bailey of Roswell, Ga., and Faye Chasteen and husband Russell of Roswell, Ga. Six grandchildren, Lisle Cormier and wife Mary Claire and Elise Cormier of Atlanta; Timothy Chasteen and wife Barcia of Tucker, Ga.; Terri Childers and husband Michael of Norcross, Ga.; David Chasteen and wife Cindy of Sterrett, Al.; and Daniel Chasteen and wife Jennifer of Atlanta. Eleven great-grandchildren: Emily, Audrey, Isaac, and Owen Chasteen; Ben and Julia Childers; Bailey, Bonnie, and Martha Chasteen; and Matera and Livia Chasteen. And many loving nieces and nephews.

She will be most remembered for the love, devotion, encouragement, and support she has shown to her family and friends throughout the years. She and her husband were involved in establishing the first Georgia school for retarded children, which was founded in Griffin. She loved gardening, sewing, and especially enjoyed many joyous trips all over the U.S. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the Women's Mission Union where she taught the Bible from the youngest Sunbeams through the Girls Auxiliary. For the last seven years, she lived with her daughter, Brenda, and son-in-law, Rene, in Augusta, where she was a member of Warren Road Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class where she ministered to the shut-in for several years.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of Griffin Square Dancers and the GASD where she and husband, James, with Ann had many great evenings. They also enjoyed a Griffin Bowling Center League where she was the secretary/treasury of her group. She continued going to line dance classes in Augusta and was a very active member of Senior Friends in Griffin. In Griffin, she won top honors in the 1995 District Golden Olympics by taking the Gold in horseshoes, basketball, football, softball, checkers, and clock golf. Then, in Augusta with Senior Friends, she participated in aerobics classes. She twice competed in the U.S. Nationals in checkers held in Las Vegas in 2001-2002 and participated in several state checker tourneys. She joined the Augusta YMCA with a weights trainer and took water aerobics to maintain her strength and enjoy her life to the fullest. In 2002 at the Richmond County Fair, she won first prize for her needlework and continued to cook great dishes for friends and family in Augusta.

This spunky lady loved the Lord, family, and her country beyond measure and enjoyed life to its fullest until her health declined from strokes these last three years. A time of celebration of her life was held on Friday, November 27, at 3:00 at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home in Griffin.
