The Algerian cook !!

Post by william »

A few weeks ago I was down working again in the mountainy region of Tizi-Mascarra in Algeria. On my way back to the airport after a weeks hard work I asked my chauffeur to stop in the small town of Zig , as I had spotted a guy on the corner of the street selling fresh dates ( I always come home with a few kilograms ). It was a beautiful day for the month of december , roughly about 24°C . As we got out of the car and started to walk over to the seller , I noticed a few old guys sitting at a table and to my surprise they were playing checkers!!!! My chauffeur ( who is really getting to know all bout me after numerous trips to and from the airport ) yelled " hey Mr.William is top world class player" ( To this I aknowlged rather red faced ) .I sent my "friend" :D to get the dates and settled down to play against an extremely enthousiastic old man .

Now the board was hand made , but was ok , and the black men were blue plastic bottle caps , and the white men were transparent polyproylene caps. That did not bother me , the thing that caught me out was the Algerian cook!! The board was the "wrong " way around ( double corner on left!!!!!) Wow I thought ...well lets go I can just play by numbers if I have "trouble" with the "" transposition"" :? :? :?

The single men are played like in our game with no backward jumps , but the king has the russian longjump rules .

In the end, all of these changes plus the lack of time too were just too much for me and I lost rather timidly.

Looking at my chauffeur I asked if we had time for 1 more , but I was hurried off the scene as there was still a long bumpy drive ahead.

During our trip to the airport I told the driver that I was sick of losing that game, but his only reply was while laughing "" you lost to an old man"" .

He reassured me that they are always there every day of the year from 08h00 till 18h00 playing their Algerian cooked game and he promised to stop off on the way down next time , which should be some time in February , so that I could have another "go".

This is the story of the Algerian cook signed by a sad checker loser ,but who in the end was overjoyed once again to have experienced the warm hospitality of the Algerian people

Billy, did you record the game or remember some moves ? Actually, If board is turned around 90 degrees, all you need - just turn your head also 90 degrees around and things looks brighter. This is how I played Italian Checkers on Internet.

Concerning game rules ... are you absolutely sure this happened with you in Algeria, not in Czech ?

10 points to the man called reade over there in the corner!!!!

Of course being upset by that loss sent me searching , and I eventually found out that it is the Spanish rules ,, i then downloaded a spanish checker program called windamas...

Mmm now let me see now Alex , if I am not mistaken , he played 1216 to which I replied 2420 but the remains of the game will have to be left to the imagination of the historians

Next time down though I will make mental copy of the game

William,

Is Portugese the same rules? We were staying at a hotel in Madeira last year where they had an outdoor draughts set park size. It was only on the last night that I got chatting to the barman and challenged him to a game but there wasn't time before we had to leave. He said there was quite a lot of draughts played in Madeira but we never saw any.

I have a book on Spanish draughts you might like to borrow?

Hi John

I don't actually know ,but would imagine that the possibilty of both countries playing the same rules to be pretty high.

As for the book john , thanks a lot , but for the next 6 months , and hopefully for the next 20 after that I will be pretty busy.

I'm actually at "school" right now taking a maths and french course "prepa" they call it over here , with the intention of passing the entry test into an engineering school.(It's adult continued apprentiship courses and normally if I am lucky enough to "get in" then I go to engineering school for 20 months FULLY PAID TOO!!!!)

The maths started 2 weeks ago , basic revision stuff ( but when you haven't played with the figures for a long time it's more than revision :? ) Polynomials quadratics trigonometric circle etc..I'm rusty but ok with that ... whats worrying me is the integrals , determinants complex numbers and stuff which I have never seen before!!!

So let's say forget the book , but it'd be nice to have you on standby if ( and most certainly when ) I start to get bogged down :D :D

This also means that I will be "off " the checkers circuit for some time to come , but breaks can be useful , and after the DISGUSTING Scottish Championship Fiasco created by the Young's and some other amateurs and non lovers of the games past I have been able to reassess the important things in life .

So keep an ear open for cries of help starting with -i squared !!!!!!!

greetings to all

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

William I've been reading old posts and I have to say this is one of my favourite posts, and I agree with Irma , it sounds very interesting and exotic. I will one day travel to Morocco (Morocco and Syria are very high on my places to go list) and i know this is probably not so but in my imagination and the little i know Algeria is similar to Morocco.

When i was growing up, at an early age my grandfather and father taught me to play on a 10X10 board and with flying kings..... not sure what rules are that. Dominos and checkers are more popular than checkers in most spanish speaking countries, it is a pity about all the variants..... they enrich and weaken the game at the same time.

Good day to you William from rainy queensland, I hope you have a great 2011.
Cheers

Danny,

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draughts for more information about 10x10 draughts.
