3 move qualifying tournament

Post by kiwinurse »

WCDF 3-Move Qualification Tournament 2010.

A bid has been accepted from the Irish Draughts Association to host the 3-move Qualifying Tournament 2010 at the Radisson Hotel, Dublin, Ireland from Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 October 2010. (The Irish Open will be held at the same venue from Saturday 23 to 26 October 2010).

The first 10 players in the Qualifying Tournament will be given 100 euroes each. The overall winner will be the official challenger to play Alex Moiseyev for the World 3-move Championship in 2011. In the event of the winner declining this opportunity, the next highest finishing player will become the challenger. The person who plays Alex Moiseyev for the world title will receive a bonus payment of 2,000 euroes (approximately US$2,000 at today’s rate of exchange) from the IDA after the match is concluded.

It is also intended to host Women’s and Youth events subject to entries.

This has been announced in one of the UK checkers mags. Why has it not been announced in here?Do the organizers of the event want to keep it a strictly UK event?and if its a world qualifier, where better than to announce it on the forum.
Interesting to note that the prize money is strictly for the Mens event, and as an afterthought the womens and the youths is
mentioned.
No mention of prize money here. Why is that?Do the members of the WCDF not hold any interest or think that women and youth are important enough to warrant any reward?

I also asked a question earlier in here with no response from the WCDF.The question was "And if any women chooses to go(to the qualifier)is there a guarantee that the womens winner would actually get to play Amangul the following year?"

It is published on this site, Jan.
And it was published since the bid was accepted.
Just look at the site.
It is also published on various other sites and magazines.

Price money is not given for the youth and women yet, as they simply don't know if there is interest at all.
But I guess the organizers will only give away price money for a Women QT winner (I suppose you are interested in 1st place Jan), after the WC match was played.
This is also the condition for the men btw.

Are you interested in playing there?
The QT is played immediately after the Irish Open, so you can get a "two-for-one".
A chance no-one should simpy ignore.

My response echoes what Ingo has already said, but anyway:

The ad for the qualifying tournament has been running on this site for several weeks as a front page article, and on the calendar page.

I can’t answer the question about a woman’s prize as I am not the bidder. (It is a good question, though, that maybe someone else can answer?) In the Isle of Wight bid, Hugh made a later donation to the bid which helped enable Wilma to get a prize. We will also have to see if there is enough participants to even have women’s and youth divisions.

The winner of the women’s event will be recognized as having the right to challenge Amangul. Naturally, WCDF will call for bids (the same procedure as for overall world title involving Alex), but cannot guarantee at this early stage that a match will actually take place, esp. without a bid to review. In 2009, neither lady participant (Wilma or runner-up Joan) had interest in pursuing a match for 2010, and "challenger withdrawal" also occurred for the 2009 ladies 3-move match. In the absence of a third-party bid (or bid by current champion), the challenger may need to be pro-active with a bid (as I did in my own upcoming match to get the ball rolling).

John,

Yes, WCDF bye-law 6.12 permits independent challenges:

6.12 The WCDF recognises a World Champion’s right to make a voluntary defence of their title to an independent challenger. However such a match must not interfere with the normal schedule of events ...

To be practical, the independent challenger would probably have to offer a fairly substantial bid for the champion to consider taking on extra matches.

The problem still remains that even if the qualifier is won,and the woman or youth wants to challenge, theres no standard put on the bid,and the onus is still on the challenger.World matches should be played on neutral ground, not in the participants home countries to be fair to both parties concerned. The WCDF should put up a proper standard and cut off point on the bid,so that the challenger can get a fair shake, and not be worried about running around trying to get funding all the time. And the champion should be made to accept a bid that is fair and reasonable, not want more and more prize money etc.
This has never happened with the mens championship matches,as good money is always found,no problem there to raise a bid.Until women and youth are given the same respect, its a waste of time and money attending world qualifiers. And youth participation and women participation in such events is doomed to fail. With no more youth coming onboard, checkers is really dead. You cannot keep all the money for the top men,it should be fairly distributed.

Jan,

I agree with many of your sentiments. It would be wonderful if we always had a neutral third party with unlimited funds for every match. But the reality is we don't have such a fund, and I see no plan here from where all this money can originate (although world title matches would make a good "estate planning" subject for the future).

Some men's matches have had very limited prize funds too, like King-Kondlo where both players had to fly over Atlantic. One significant advantage of a non-neutral venue (where hopefully an impartial official is still present) is that you usually save on the airfare costs for one delegation.

Lastly, I point out that Joan and Patricia held the ladies title a combined 21 years, but were challenged only 8 times total. Naturally, a higher frequency of matches than this is preferable, but having an idle year or two is not unusual, statistically-speaking.

But Richard this qualifier has plenty of funding, and its going to the men only. What incentive is it for women and youth to come over, when there is nothing specific in prize money, whereas the men have the amount spoken of.Its like the rest are unimportant, and an afterthought.
As far as the womens world title matches are concerned Joan and Patricia played without the benefit of the setting up of the WCDF.Is it not your role to see that a world match is played every year,3 move one year, and gayp the following year?If not whats the point on having this body of people?Might as well go back to the status quo.

Jan,

I've already covered women's title matches in my earlier posts -- so the following will be my last post on this topic for now.

It's unlikely that a women's qualifier division will go unfunded. I went back and re-read the bid proposal -- The bidders are very open to awarding prizes for women and youth (either by taking from original bid money or from a separate donation source) -- IF these divisions exist. At this point, it would be very sketchy to present a prize distribution now, when final donations and number of entrants are unkowns 9 months in advance. Therefore, the bidder suggested flexibility and a later decision here. Of course, it would help if federations can send in their nominations to John Reade sooner than later, if possible. (For starters, I suspect USA will have at least one woman and one youth.) Lastly, there is no separate "men's" event. Overall world title (and top qualifier prize money) is open to anyone who thinks they can play the best checkers at the tournament!

Dear Jan,

I must admit that in an ideal world with lots of players and money at stake your ideas are good.
But the reality is quite different:
Almost all title matches were not played on neutral ground.
No matter if men or women.
Also, there is no youth match.
There might be a youth tournament, but a match would be of no use if the player that holds tht title simply grows too old.
So for them, the QT is already a WC provided enough players show up.

I agree that the women title should have the same recognition and funding, but in reality the supply of funds as well as the turnout in women's event were low.
Yet the WCDF did not give up the idea and indeed insists on having and remaining those titles.
And, as it turned out, some women did not really show interest to play the match but rather played a waiting game and demanded to win the title on forfeit or to refuse to challenge outright.
To those I can only say:
We reap what we sow.

I am ignoring your very tacky and snide comments Ingo. They are an insult to the four of us Women who were willing to play, but the conditions were not good or safe enough to go.Dont forget i still have your emails where you advised me on my match, which are contradictory to what you are telling me here.Because i do not want to embarrass you,i will refrain from printing them.

I can attest to the validity of Jan’s statement as I have read every one of the emails to which she refers. A certain person knows that if all the emails were published he would be embarrassed to say the least.

The impression I received after reading the announcement concerning the 3-Move Qualifying Tournament 2010 was that the author must have seriously strained himself to compose that final sentence concerning the women! That final, bleak little sentence reads like an afterthought……

As I understand it, a set amount has been decided upon for the top ten men playing in the qualifier; plus 2000 euros for the one who plays Alex Moiseyev. No amount has even been suggested for the women or youth. Shouldn't they be assured of something? I don't think there is any question but what there will be participants in these matches, too. The young men and/or women in the youth division are our future masters. And the women need more incentive to keep playing competition checkers. It's been just a "man's" game for too long.
And considering the difficulties that were involved in trying to arrange a women's match last year, and one participant being forfeited, I think the WCDF should in the future make an all-out effort to have the match in question played on neutral ground. And if the challenger makes a reasonable bid, should the other party be allowed to raise that bid? How do we know the money was there? It seems to me that some of WCDF's rules need overhauling, or more added.

Wilma you said it all really. If womens checkers, and youth,is to be reduced to nothing,as it seems now, just a laughable "Oh by the way,if we get some entrants in these divisions,we might slip them a wee prize,if theres money left over, of course!"Whats the point? And if these divisions are to be reduced to an afterthought, and are clearly unworkable, then scrap them, because there is nothing in them to induce anyone to travel such a long way to play, there is no respect in them anymore.
