Scandal at Scottish open
Scandal at Scottish open
I would like to take the opportunity to use this forum to vehicule to the checker playing public my intense sadness .
I won the Scottish , but left Stonehaven feeling like a loser , feeling insulted not only for myself but also for all the great champions who were luckier than I to have "Touched" the Scottish cup , and feeling as if I and the had been robbed.
On the day of the presentation I noticed to my dismay that the Cup was missing from the trophy table . When questioned about this Mr Young told me he was very sorry but had MISLAID it. After stating my concern about this rather hottly "they " wandered off to try and find it...
Anyone who goes to a ty wants to win it , but also dreams of lifting the trophy , is it not.
Further more a trophy with such distinguished names, absent from the event ,is a complete insult to the past greats of the game as generally everyone " has a look" and chats of the past greats. These great players were also insulted and forgotten.
Lets get it straight ... any trophy belongs to the draughts community , and players past present and future , the federation or whatever it is , is only the keeper and has no right whatsoever to retain the " peoples property"
Young came back after a brief search with a second hand cup to " make the presentation look good" and I obviously refused. IF YOU KNOW WHERE YOU PUT YOUR SILVER , YOU MUST KNOW WHERE YOU PUT YOUR GOLD.
If I had accepted this Mickey mouse cup I would also have been insulting all of the greats who must have put in so much effort to win the trophy and I did not wish to do this.
I will be writing a letter SDA claimimg that the cup be sent to me , and I believe these are my rights .
I also wish for an official apology to myself and every winner living or deceased of the Scottish for the lack of respect shown .
Just a small detail , when I took the british trophy home in 2000 , I did hand it back in 2002 , and I do not consider myself a thief.
The 24th of july was also the 2 anniversary of the passing of my father , and thus had more significant meaning for me too to hold up the cup .
I am very sorry I had to reveal this , but I also feel that the next winner AND IT WILL DEFINATELY NOT BE ME , should be entitled to hold and keep the trophy whether he be irish american english or Scottish like myself.
As of now I await the apologies ... and the cup

Re: Scandal at Scottish open
Hi William,
Firstly, my very sincere congratulations on winning the Scottish Open. You are a great player and deserve the title.
At this moment, however, I am feeling heartbroken over the loss of the Scottish Open trophy as it held, as it will for many others, great memories with my late father winning it three times. May I say that I think you did the right thing in refusing a replacement trophy.
I was equally upset when I heard that the Gelsthorpe trophy (itself a replacement of the original English Open trophy), was "lost." This trophy had my late father's name inscribed five times upon it.
Other trophies, including the "Bill Edwards Memorial" trophy and the "English Open Intermediate" trophy, have been "lost" in the past twenty years.
To say that I am sick to my stomach with all of this would be an understatement.
Best wishes,
Lindus Edwards.

Thank you Lindus
But you misunderstood my post.
The Youngs say they have the cup in their house but cannot " find it" !!!!! However they can find the Mickey mouse cup.
I say again IF YOU KNOW WHERE YOU PUT YOUR SILVER THEN YOU KNOW WHERE YOU PUT YOUR GOLD!!! And I will not be fooled ,, they just feel that they are the owners of this cup and do not trust anyone outside of their clan . and so did not want to give it to me .... fearing what I do not know . BUT I WILL BE CLAIMING THAT THE CUP BE SENT TO ME . I AM NOT A THIEF .
In respect however of past greats ,I say again , it should have been on the trophy table . These greats and the game have been severly insulted and it leaves me feeling sad for the future of Scottish draughts

Hi William,
They have the trophy in their house but cannot find it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you will see from my previous post, a number of trophies went "missing" never to be found again. The Gesthorphe trophy went "missing in a house" and was never seen again.
To describe that matter as pathetic would be to dignify it.
Lindu Edwards.

Yes indeed ,
This incident has left me feeling empty .
A crime has been commited and I will not let it rest until justice is done , especially when supportive encouragement is forthcoming not only from shocked internationalists like yourself but also insiders on the SDA and Scotlands top players T Watson and J McGill , who when told about this said he was totally disgusted by their behaviour !!!
Thank you lindus...

Re: Scandal at Scottish open
Dear William,
congratulations for your victory.
It is a strange and sad story that they mislaid their trophy, and I can understand that you were not satisfied with a reserve cup.
Nobody would be.
I hope they find the cup and that it will be kept safe until the next tournament.
Your name should be listed as well as that of all the other great players that won it.

"SCANDAL IN STONEY"
Scandal at the Scottish,as the drama it enfolds
No cup to be presented , of silver nor of gold
Ive heard this story oft before, and many more im fear
Cups are going a missing, one almost every year.
Its such a disapointment, embarrasment as well
Enought to make a grown man cry,if the truth i was to tell
But life goes on no matter what, and when im old n grey
Twill be a nice wee story,to tell the "wains" some day
Of how i fought hard for a week, no food and little sleep
In a tent so cold and draughty, blowin rain and hail n sleet
And when my greatest moment came,my heart was racing fast
Proud winner of the Scottish Cup, the "feckin" thing got LOST.
I might write a song about it,and put in on UTUBE
And maybe sing it for you ,when im in a better mood
For when i think of what went wrong,it makes me very "cross"
The day i won the Scottish Cup.........and the "feckin" thing got LOST.!!

Re: Scandal at Scottish open
Hi again William,
I concur with your every word about the rights of a player having won a major championship, in that the trophy should be presented to the winner and that the champion be allowed to take the trophy home with him.
I have heard through the grapevine that the Scottish Open trophy was damaged and that Graham Young is in the process of having it repaired. Even if this is so it should have been repaired in time for the presentation.
I hope with all sincerity that you receive the trophy before too long, albeit though the post which is not the same thing as receiving at the presentation of course.
With best wishes,
Lindus.

Hi lindus
Well the Youngs seem to be inventing any old excuse ... firstly it has been misplaced in their home !!! then all of a sudden it has been damaged and is in for repair work .!! They are a bunch of lying amatures , and I will bet a lifetimes wages that I nor anyone else will see or hold that cup ever again . That is sad very sad .
However I will be contacting the new president of SDA soon in the rare hope that he will be able to iron things out
all the best

Well. Now as we all know that the cup has been found, would it be too much to ask for those sub human posters who took pleasure out of kicking the Youngs' when they thought they had them down now be MEN enough to offer a public appology to these totally innocent people. As the saying goes "To err is human, to forgive is divine". In the meantime, I will not be holding my breath
