Before John Napier passed away he left a sum of money to the Scottish DA. He, along with the late Derek Oldbury felt that freestyle/ GAYP draughts were in decline and wished to see this format revived. John's wishes were for a Bi-annual freestyle tourney to be played for in his memory. Tourney open to all Scottish players or players residing in Scotland. Along with the shield, the winner is presented with a top quality draughts board.
Winners to date include Brian Kilgour (senior) Glasgow; David Glennie, Forfar; Joe Davidson, Aberdeen; Jimmy Grant, Aberdeen; Joe Sloan, Glasgow; George Starrs, Dundee; Colin Young, Stonehaven; William Docherty, Glasgow; Lamont Inkster, Orkney Islands; Jim Mackie, Burntisland; Willie Anderson, Blairgowrie; Hamish Budge, Caithness; Graham Young, Stonehaven; and Canno Bakie, Aberdeen. John's wishes stipulated that any player could win the tourney only once. 2010 tourney was played on 26th and 27th June in Stonehaven. Results were

Re: John Napier Shield
Yes, congratulations Bernard.
I know that you are very strong in GAYP.
And it is the real game of draughts/checkers, where skills and talent counts and book knowledge is less telling.
And also congratulations to Colin Young.
