2010 World Cup!
Boy oh boy, who would have thought a month ago that the World Cup would have an all European final? Hard for me to believe that both Argentina and, especially, Brazil got beat.
The Germany/Spain semifinal ought to be interesting... .
Soccer, the other beautiful game (after checkers).

Re: 2010 World Cup!
Since no South American Team ever won a WC in Africa, I kind of expected that.
Note that there is no time difference between Africa and Europe.
And that the low temperatures of this WC, held in winter time, also favors European teams.

Re: 2010 World Cup!
Good points, Ingo.
I thought Argentina might have some problems (after all, you know a team run by Diego Maradona might have some troubles...), but I rather thought that Brazil, given the way the team was playing, was going to take it all... . Not so.
I thought England would do much better as well; their second goal against Germany, the one that was denied, really hurt them but, then, they weren't playing very well anyway.
It's been a very exciting World Cup and I'm sure the final, whether Spain or Germany wins the semi, will be worth watching!

Re: 2010 World Cup!
Commiserations to Germany. They were without doubt the attacking team of the tourney. But that is football. It is also a bad result for ENGURLAND. Their last ditch claim to have been beaten by the eventual winners/finalist has vanished. I am sure her majesty, LIZZIE 2nd must be most disappointed also. She now realises that Andy Murray really did make an attempt to bow to her at Wimbledon. Seems her cattaracts are getting worse. More expense for the hard pressed Bruttish taxpayers.

Re: 2010 World Cup!
As I was reading your post, Bernard, I just at the same time saw the news. I did not think Spain would do it, but there you are...that, as you said, is football.
Netherlands and Spain in the World Cup final. Who would have thought, eh?
Exciting stuff, for sure.

Spain takes it 1 - 0 in the final three minutes of overtime!
A hard-fought game.

Re: 2010 World Cup!
The dutch tried all to get a yellow or red card, but even that plan did not work.
There was no way to stop Spain with the support of that octopus.

Both teams played dirty. But with no doubts Spain is a real and true Champion. Nice football.Ingo_Zachos wrote:The dutch tried all to get a yellow or red card,
The style of Spain differs from traditional European style and is sort of mix Latin American and European styles. Very strong defense, no holes.

True. And a very flowing attack as well. The style of Spain differs from traditional European style and is sort of mix Latin American and European styles. Very strong defense, no holes.

It turned into a very physical game and I think the best team won. The winning goal was an inspired piece of work. Very, very pretty.
Now we have to wait another four years... .
I hope the octopus doesn't receive any more death threats!

Re: 2010 World Cup!
I loved this world cup despite the fact we had an all european final and that both my teams (argentina + australia, spain is my third team since that is where 100% of my ancestors are from) didnt go very far.
since this was the first ever world cup in africa ... its a bit of a moot point...
anyway i enjoyed the final and i agree with everyone that
the best team won on the day.
cheers

Ingo i think it's misleading to say an all european final was expected since no south american team ever won in africa....Ingo_Zachos wrote:Since no South American Team ever won a WC in Africa, I kind of expected that.
