The Ballad of F.W.Slade 2010 …………Key of “D” Major

///////////////////////////////////////////////////

D G A D
Two laddies went to Inverness, and promised for to do their best.
G E A
To battle hard agin the Scots, and wrest the prize to hold aloft.
D G A D
For five long days the traded blows, on 64, squares of board
G E A
From early morn till late at night, the battle ebbed and then it flowed.

D G A D
The British Open was their dream,a task too great so it would seem.
G E A
For many greats had gone before,Tinsley,Long and many more.
D G A D
But the bhoys are up to the task, no fear of Watson nor of Pask.
G E A
Well prepared whoever comes , to beat the Irish Lambeg drum.

The English ,Welsh were also there, but none to match the Irish pair.
No surrender was the shout, across the board the call rang out.
And as the hours and days rolled by, game by game getting bye
The winning post was in sight, held their nerve as well they might.

Mc Cosker having forged ahead, just a lad of tender years.
Perhaps the youngest maybe so, no quarter given so im told.
Hannigan was in second place, and complicated every race.
Betwixed between up and down, for Slade they came to Inver town.

Now Slade sits on Shanes mantle piece, like new was he in ’38.
Shining bright as before, inside 65 Glebe Gardens door.
And Myles will try next time around,to coax him down to Claada town.
In Kirks, the glasses will be raised, to Slade, to Slade, afore we leav.

And that’s the story at an end, the twists the turns and many bends.
Of just one week in the life, of two bra bhoys who took a flight.
To Inverness in 2010, And brought back home a good ol friend.
Another Irish name will be engraved,on the famous Shield of F.W.Slade.
