There were no offense, Liam ! I don't know much English songs, but I was familiar with those two. Your remark was a bit humoristical, I wasn't offended at all, and just extended your joke when quoted "Pandora Box".

You shouldn't try to find only negatives or negative intention in any of my posts because this is simply not true. And same on my part. I don't look with microscope on any of your message, posts and each letter trying to find "hidden message".

We are very different. The things which llok offensive to one, doesn't look the same way to other ... And opposite way.

Foir instance - jewish people were a victims at the highest level in Soviet Union where we had a government antisemitism. Raising in such hate atmosphere for years, make people very sensitive to anything, sometimes - without serious reason.

liam stephens wrote:Hi Matthew, neither did I. I never imagined that a reference to two of Elvis Presley's hits - 'Im All Shook Up' and 'Heartbreak Hotel' would be capable of causing offence. If so, I offer you my apologies.

I don't know what you mean about Elvis. It is maybe better to understand a situation before offering apologies toward the situation, so your words are less likely to lose credibility in that fashion.

I replied to you, because you said I acted childish. In America, that is understood as a bad way of behavior.

Mike, I got involved with checkers by my grandpa. He use to play with me when I was really young. I started playing checkers on the computer at age 16. I have been playing off and on since then. Is this your first year in checkers? How did you begin? :)

Matthew, in Basic Checkers Part 4, page 10, note B is where you saw the reference to 'Pandora's Box' mentioned in connection with checkers.

Ah! Thank you a lot, Gene. It's always a good feeling to know that my memory hasn't completely left me yet hehe
Thanks again

With this one [17-14] penetrating move, White opens up a veritable 'Pandora's box' of attacks. Anything else is strictly second-class.

Hi, guys !

This is correct. Basic Checkers has this reference. But originally - I think it was a Science Fiction novell (don't remember author). It was a planet Pandora - most danger planet in Universe, which had alot of monsters, fantastic death creatures, poisen autmosphere and non humanoids residents angry9: .

This is where it came to Russian language and eventually became an idiom and synonim of maximum dangerity.

I agree with Richard Fortman, that this definition is well apply to this opening. Draw after this move is very narrow.

Regards,

Alex

Re: Is this your first year in checkers?

Yeppers, at least serious checkers =)

Re: How did you begin?

Welp, like most here I enjoy puzzles and games so I thought I teach myself more about the game. I enjoy programming puzzles too. And as you know I may be writing a checker database over the next several weeks. To give you an idea of my work, Matt, you can <click here to download these puzzles> for Windows as an example to see where this idea may go. The package includes:

Knight Moves - Swap the posistions of the four Black & White knights in 16 moves or less.

8 Queens - The eight queens puzzle is the problem of putting eight chess queens on an 8

I used the translator at http://babelfish.altavista.com/ sometimes I know its nice to be greeted in our native language.

Thank you for the tips, I'll work hard to try and absorb all the brainfood I find here in the forum.

I like that; would be a neat way to teach published play. The buzz provides the atmosphere of being in an electric chair that's safe, hehe. Which language are you using to develop these?

I'm hoping the same as well.

[snicker] Yeppers that's it. Almost a gentle admonishment for a 'bad' move!

Do you code the gui by hand? What IDE do you use if not? Thanks :)
GUI is not fun in java for me. I would not think it trivial for C either.

Hi Matt.

For an IDE I use <TextPad>. (Mainly because I dabble in alot of languages and this gives me a single IDE for all).

For a free compiler, checkout <Pelles C>. Which has a nice IDE btw.
