"Checkers"

A clown playing checkers.

Checkers is a story illustration from Ladies' Home Journal magazine. Published in 1929, the story was about an older circus clown named Pokey Joe who feels that he's no longer funny. His circus pals try to lift his spirits and renew his confidence by letting him win at a game of checkers.

Commissioned by Brown & Bigelow for the Boy Scout Calendar, I am unsure of the date of this print, but 50 of Norman Rockwell's prints were used on these calendars from 1923 through 1976.
