My original statement on the game of checkers I believe is correct IT IS NOT GOING TO SURVIVE THE WAY IT IS AND NEEDS A DRASTIC CHANGE. If i was the one who ran the ACF which I will not but if I was this is what I would do. I would build a online site maybe partnership with one that is already created tell them the idea of hosting a online ladder with a playoff system at the end tell them about hosting tournaments online also about profiles where individual players can keep up to date on each other and then what I would do is designate a portion of the year for a checkers season yea I would scrap the traditional state championship tournaments and southern states and current nationals format. My plan would be more professional as to say lets bring all these people who set them tournaments up and lets make a ACF season with 5 events in different locations throughout the season say...Newyork,Orlando,Columbus,Chicago and then you make a point system and define what is PRO and SEMIPRO then hold nationals say in las vegas inviting these players to attend.

What do you like about checkers?: In checkers you have to deal with every threat with defense or attacking that man. You can't run away. Face your enemy and never back down. Amen. With a dry cool wit like that I could be an action hero. I am also into tattoos, arm wrestling, beer, the universe/telescopes and the NHL. GO BRUINS!! I started playing checkers at the age of 31. I have a lot of catching up to do.

I agree. Checkers needs a website where you can only play checkers.
A serious website would attract serious players who then chase ratings at real tournaments.
I know I would.
I read on another website that they had 400 paying members at $20 each per year.
They said they were just covering the server rental with that...Math says that is $8000 per year.

I would pay up to $100 per year to use the ACF server. At that price you would need less than 100
paying members to break even. I didn't look up server rental costs and maybe it would cost more
to have live games? This was a turn based website. I'm just going on what the website owner said.

Just my opinion. Nothing serious.

Robert...I wouldn't try to set that up on an existing website...that's already happening...Goldtoken does that and they have Ladders and stuff. That site sucks. You say "hello" and they ban you. The ACF needs it's own playing site. Nothing but checkers.

Phil,

Personally, I enjoy playing at Wyllie's online draughts club. Only real checker players play there and you can play live or take up to a few days answering. It costs $25 a year to play on this site and I have played on this site for years.

All the best,

I thought Wyllies was a dead site? If I remember correctly you have to pay to get in....even to see what it is like.
If it is still going strong they should let new players take a look around. Due to the fact you can't see anything unless you pay I assumed it was dead long ago.
Most sites let you atleast see the layout before paying. If I am wrong and I can take a look before paying please give me the new web address.

So it's www.wylliedraughts.com and it seems you can get a 1 year subscription for $25 which is a good price and they also have a $1 week pass to check it out I guess.
How many people play there? Are the forums active? Anyone else here use wyllie's website?

Billy states that playing online makes us lazy when this is not the case it is just more convenient and a bigger base of players getting more people to a live event starts online...

I see your point now Robert, i agree totally. some of us are so far that online is the only option (barring the ocassional special event we might choose to attend)
I dont think that online events make us lazy, and i think that what we always forget is that Checkers is a SOCIAL game.... so a ladder would be a great way for an organization to create a social event where people can mingle and still compete. All the successful draughts associations (like Italy and Brazil for example) always nurture their competitive side but ALSO they social aspects.
In my opinion an ACF sponsored ladder would be great and as Jason mentioned it wouldnt take lots of people to keep it running.... the problems usually are with the people if they dont maintain interest ladders quickly degenerate into 3 people playing and everyone else dissapearing :)

cheers Mr Maxwell and thanks for the clarification :)

Robert, You misunderstood my post what I was trying to address. Im not saying people are lazy for playing checkers online I too play checkers online. I was talking about a ACF tournament that was discussed earliar to be played online. I did not like the sarcasm at the end of the comment but Eric explained it diffrently then I was thinking. I thought people was referring to a official tournament online and not some fun thing of everyone meeting and playing. As for technology as long as its not abused its wonderful for example. The programmers that made checker programs made them with the intention of a learning tool not to cheat other players. Technology can be abused not just in checkers but chess or any mind sport game when you start bringing computers into professional organizations. Do you agree with me or see my point on anything I mentioned? Billy

Progs were still there at VOG, I can confirm this. But ... yes, it's usage was miserable compare with other sites.
I am playing checkers, not chess.
