Many of us believed Rick Callaghan had died when he stopped playing in various servers and his Idaho number was not answered. One person even claimed to have been told of his death when they called his number. This was incorrect. Rick's obituary just appeared in the Charlottesville Progress.

Rick and I were both past presidents of the Virginia Chess Federation. We both lived in Charlottesville and when he took up checkers I followed him. Then we both left town around the same time. For a period we had been playing at one home or the other at least once a week.
I am revisiting the grief I felt when I first thought he had died. I have known him since the early 1960s. May he rest in peace.

Re: Rick Callaghan
I am very shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Rick Callaghan. I first met him at the 2001 ACF National Tournament held in Las Vegas, where we were paired up together for a match. I had to fight very hard to draw the match.
We hit it off immediately. After the match, we talked about a number of topics of mutual interest, including our favorite restaurants in Las Vegas.
If my memory is correct, he was also present at two other ACF National Tournaments in Las Vegas. Although we never played each other in another match, we continued to enjoy our conversations. I also had the pleasure to meet his charming wife, who used to enjoy joining in on our restaurant conversations.
I have lost a friend, and I will miss him dearly.

In spite of my sadness I had one good laugh when I read the obituary a second time. I recall that around 1970 Rick had two cats named Capablanca and Botwinnik. He only played chess back then. His first wife won custody of the cats and renamed them, The obituary listed a cat among his survivors. The name of the cat is Wiswell.

Re: Rick Callaghan
I have met Rick online a long time ago .... and he was a very nice guy to play with and very entertaining to listen to as well.
Like so many others (young and old) from those days .... it is hard to know where they are or what happened.
My sincere condolences to his family and to those who got to meet him personally... alas, i never had that pleasure.
Danny.
