That was thoroughly enjoyable Pal.
We have something very similar in oz ... it is called "bush poetry" and it has a very very long tradition.
Some of australia's best known poetry falls into this category.
I will have to go and find one now to share

I really enjoyed the humour in it which is a prominent feature of most bush poetry too

Yes Danny "bush poetry" is not unfamiliar to me.

Some years back "Bush Poetry" had a big part in Elko Nevada's National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and several Australian poets were featured and took part that year.

Australian Poets have often taken part in Elko's annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Last year the popular Australian “bush poet" Milton Taylor was invited back and for the first time "bush poet" Carol Heuchan took the stage. Carol's poems “Rosie” “Angels on Horseback” and “Tacky Hacky” were hugely popular and she received a standing ovation which brought her to tears.

Milton Taylor "has spent his life working in the Australian sheep shearing industry. During his childhood, poetry and yarn-spinning were considered important social skills, and he learned many poems and stories from his father. Milton actively preserves poetry of the traditional Australian poets, such as Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson, and feels that by teaching traditional poetry to the younger generation they can gain a greater appreciation for history. Milton currently lives and works on a large sheep operation in New South Wales, Australia."
Unfortunately, it turned out that Milton was not able to attend.

Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson are the best known poets down under and rightly so.
I never knew that they do gatherings for Cowboy poetry.... i really love America's diversity

Waltzing Matilda by Patterson was considered for the national anthem and to many it is the Unofficial national Anthem

I have a friend who lives in Calgary and I have always wanted to attend the "Stampede"they do there.... as i have a couple of mates that love bull riding.... that is one tough tough sport let me tell ya... and in america its is quite lucrative... my friends are in the semipro circuit here so they arent quite at the level to go overseas yet

i have a couple of mates that love bull riding.... that is one tough tough sport let me tell ya...

I love all the events of a traditional rodeo and my wife and I along with the kids attended the Circle City Grand National Rodeo many times but it is no more. In resent years it's been replaced by the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) Built Ford Tough Series' Jack Daniel's Invitational.

You may be interested in knowing that Ben Jones from New South Wales, Australia (currently 3rd in the BFTS 2011 Standings) finished tied for 15-17 place in the event average along with Pistol Robinson and Jason O'Hearn (also from New South Wales, Australia) here in Indianapolis 2 weeks ago.

Brendon Clark from Morpeth, Australia bucked off of his bulls and didn't get a score here but check out this Built Ford Tough "Invasion of the Bulls" promo video he did at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before the event. (A few days later the 3 inches of ice arrived, LOL, his cowboy boots wouldn't have had any traction then!)

Cowboys from Australia are as tough as they come!

Maybe Checkers could takes some lessons from Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR).

Based in Pueblo, Colorado, the PBR was organized in 1992 by 21 bull riders (Pooling their money together $1000.00 each.) and has grown into an international organization which includes PBR Australia, PBR Brazil, PBR Canada, and PBR Mexico. They have more than 300 events each year and have awarded more than 1 billion dollars in total prize money since it's beginning.

But then again, while millions are willing to pay to see a few cowboys risk their lives riding bulls, not many (if any) are willing to pay to see someone play checkers. Can you imagine in your mind's eye a match between James Wylie and Marion Tinsley, probably only draw a small crowd and no TV coverage. I guess it's no secret that checkers is not a spectator sport and probably never will be.

I guess I'll just keep playing checkers, it's more fun and I know it's a lot safer than riding bulls.

I havent finished checking out all the links Pal . but i will
thanks a lot for that.... my fathers family comes from a "working the land" humble background and i have a certain affinity to that.
On weekends every now and then i walk around everywhere with my Akubra hat on and this causes no small amount of laughs by my family and friends, but they are used to it by now.
I think there are certain values that have been lost now that we dont live on the land anymore.

this topic fascinates me and i hope we keep going for a while.

Okay Danny,

Maybe you can tell, this topic fascinates me also. Maybe we can even say I have an obsession for it along with checkers and a few other things, and besides it would put us in agreement with my wife. LOL

Anyway, I can't do it right now but later I'll add some information about the evolution of the hat.

I think you'll find it interesting.

Though there are thousands of miles of ocean separating us, there seems to be more similarities than differences in the links of the chain that connect our countries together.

Such as checkers, your country's drover and our country's cowboy heritages, Benjamin Dunkerley's "Akubra" bush hat and John B. Stetson's "Boss of the Plains" cowboy hat...

Pal i always find the number of similarities and the concordances between USA and Australia uncanny. The only major differences are that America is a large population while we are almost insignificant at 22 odd million and the differences between southern and northern hemisphere.

We have fought together pretty much on every war since the early 19th century onwards. (on the same side of course)
The people that have populated both our countries have been pioneers, adventurers and outcasts from other lands. And they made the best of a truly inhospitable environment, creating a multi-cultural society that prides itself on freedom and self-reliance.
