Progress in teaching kids

Post by kim willis »

I wanted to give an update on my teaching in the schools.
I have really taken this to heart in teaching kids how to play this wonderful game. I just returned in going to one of my schools this morning and this class was 4th grade kids. Would like you all to know that these kids have learned 3 games.... Old 14th, Cross and Single corner games. These kids have amazed me in how they can remember each game and the differences. I had a mother come in this morning to tell me that her daughter talks about how she could not miss tuesdays because of me coming into that class and her excitement in learning more about the game. I sat and listened to those kids speak of playing their parents and giving their parents lessons at home.

These kids have picked out a name for their class and I will be buying these kids t-shirts. This is a small step but an important one for them.

Progress
They can tell me a sqaure and its number with no hesitation.
They can notate their games on paper.
they know what pitch is, sacraficing means in the game.
many many more things are happening each week which makes me very hopeful that these kids will want to learn more.

Folders all have with all games they play. And I have found that when they play each other the room is as quiet as a mouse, And I see future checker players.

The lessons I give these kids are being solved by each and if one has a problem with solving they all help each other out. I call this team work. Plus each and everyone of these kids are being good sports. If one loses they say its ok I will figure out how to win next time. And i see a smile or a little giggle come out by a opps (mistake).

I wish I could do this everyday of my life. Wish whoever is reading this could do it as well because this is what it is all about.

Sounds good Kim,

I'm working on a project with "Tiger Cub" Scouts, (My grandson's den.) I'm gathering materials so the boys can make their own checkerboards. I have a box of more than a thousand unfinished wood checkers that the boys can stain. (I want to stay away from painting due to the mess and time.) My wife suggested liquid shoe polish so I tried brown (which we had) and it worked great and dried in less than 5 minutes but when I went to the store to buy red and white shoe polish I only found black, brown and white. I purchased a bottle of white :) but was disapointed :( to find it woundn't color the wood only dried to a clear finish so I guess we will just go with brown and natural colored checkers.

Keep up the good work Kim.

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

Keep at it Kim .... you are doing great.
It is hard to describe in words how refreshing it is to see someone like you at work.
As i have said before, you are an inspiration.

hello John,
The equipment I have is being used every bit of it. These kids do not need numbered boards now they know the numbers of the squares. If it was not for the donations that you all sent to me I would not have had enough. And I want to thank each and every person who has sent me the equipment I have to teach these kids. No one knows how much I appreciate what you all have done. As for equipment At this time it is just enough.

Now we are looking at t-shirts being made for them to wear on the days I teach these kids and boy are they excited. These kids now are teach their parents. Plus I have made up problems to take home. These are being solved by not only the kids but the parents. Which is nice.

Thank you John for helping me and everyone else.
