They are Irish but they are not green !

Great come back, Shane, congrats for retaining title! Also Garrett demonstrated very strong solid skills to lead the whole event to the rest. Luck comes from experience and knowledges. Did you have repair round ?

I remember - this event had Senior Division in 2010 ... Bad economy ... or poor promotion ... or both ?

Thanks Alex,

The competition was a close one and at the end up neither Garrett or Myself had lost any games so we had to be separated by honor points.

I took a few chances in rounds 6 & 7 which enabled me to equalize with Garrett going into the last round which was a repair, we had 4 draws each throughout the tournament. I was grinding out wins all week and was lucky to catch up with Garrett at the end who scored a very noteable 3-1 against Myles Hannigan in an impressive fashion.

One of Garretts opponents that he had played previously in an earlier round had withdrawn after round 6 so this made an impact on Garretts final honor points.

My congratulations to Garrett on a great follow up to his performance at the WQT in Dublin. Also thanks to John McElhone for putting me up for a few days had a great time in BallyRonan.

Regards,

This is a very good example and answer to Dr. John Reade who opposed idea to drop ponits of the weakest opponent when calculate HP.

Earlier tonight I have a conversation with Garret. It appears that one of his opponents withdrew after 6 rounds and at the end of the tournament Garret was penalised for this. He told me that he was informed that he was placed 2nd because of this, and that honour points may not have been calculated at all - it may have been assumed to be the case. Personally I would not agree with this verdict as related to me by Garret. He also informed me that he is totally dismayed and unlikely to play there again, and this is the real tragedy, and I can fully understand his sense of hurt.

During the 1980's there was a similiar situation between Pat Mc Carthy and Tom Watson at the end of an Irish Open Championship, where one of them lost out to the other on honour points simply because one of them played against John Mackay who also withdrew during the tournament, thus destroying his honour points. At the following IDA's AGM (1988/90) I proposed that if this were to occur in the future then the honour points of 9 rounds would be calculated instead of 10, - i.e. count the points from the highest 9 opponents instead of all 10. Where two opponents were to withdraw, the points of 8 would be calculated. In that sense no-one would be penalised for something that was not of their making. This proposal was accepted and passed without dissent. I am unaware that this has ever been changed. It makes complete sense and I was shocked to discover this was not done at this week's N.Irl Open. Below is a list (not full indeed!) of such potential situations.

1) Someone withdrew the event earlier or in the middle like it's happened recently in the Northern Ireland 2011.

2) Someone don't withdrew but got ill during event which seriously caused his/performance performance.

3) Someone (bad guy) got drunking during the tournament which caused his performance.

4) Potential leader in the 1st roind got extremly weak opponent, who doesn't withdrew and doesn't get ill, but had very poor performance and lost all or almost all games anyway.

5) Someone (almost bad guy) after losing 2-3 games, lose motivation, don't pay attention to rest games and got a bad score.

As we see - all these situatios are not fantastic and non-realitic and more or less happened almost in each event. Dropping points of the weakest opponent is a good statistic instrument to get better balance and erase many uncertaintes.
