What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

ACF Playing Website

Post by Danny_Alvarez »

I know this has been mentioned before and no consensus has been achieved....
but i honestly think that an official playing site for ACF/WCDF would be highly beneficial to everyone and it wouldnt be a massive financial burden.

we have technical people like Murray Cash, Martin Fierz, Ed Gilbert, Eric Strange and his team, Jason Solan etc etc etc(who love the game and could give technical advice) .... we can also post jobs on FREELANCER.com and i believe that for less than $1000 we can get a fully functioning website + iphone app + modifiable source code (just in case we wanna change things later)

I obviously dont know anything about web hosting + any other site maintenance related costs.... i am sure you guys can inform me of that.
but i really think this is something worth pursuing.

What are the main functions you would expect in such a website? do you think this could work?

(im asking cause if this doesnt happen and i get bored i might do this myself :) lol)
cheers

Danny, I have been barking up this tree for years, I have taken input for hundreds of players on what they would like to have in a play site. Being a mainly online player I also know exactly what needs to be done. I have already gotten quotes on pricing from rentacoder sites and I actually have a co-worker who is very good at java and has been working slower than a snail in the middle of winter on this project.

It will cost around 1200-1500 dollars to have the multi user applet with all options we could want. I would have had this done but do not have the funds necessary to accomplish this. If you want to put up the $$ I can host this on my server as well maintain it.... something like this requires A LOT of maintenance constantly. With the funding required for the project I could probably have it functional in as little as 6-8 weeks.

having a dedicated play site for ACF members would definitely complete my dreams that I have for checkers and would love for you to be a part of it. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this idea. ( eric.j.strange@gmail.com )

I thought ACF had made Gold Token the official ACF online server. Now, GT is primarily turn-based (which is my preferred mode) but it also has Head-to-Head. It has an ACF club and a number of very good players. It also has several other active checker clubs and a large number of versions (Pool, International, Brazilian, Russian, Italian, Spanish and many others).

I guess my concern is that I would like to see turn-based to get equal recognition with live online play. GT has gone overboard implementing 3-move and 11-man ballot, and deserves continued support as an ACF official playing site.

So since my last post in this topic my co-worker has made some progress, we have a board with pieces that move now.... long way to go but this is definitely a good start
