Bobby I hope you do come, all are welcome and the more the merrier.
I'm hoping we will have enough players for 2 divisions, but it's hard to be sure, especially as gas prices keep climbing.
I'm not sure where in NJ you are, but it takes me roughly 3 hours from Carlisle to get to Atlantic City and about the same to get to Newark. Those are the only NJ cities I've been to recently.
For any players that don't mind driving a few extra miles to the playing site there are cheaper motels on the other side of town. I had originally wanted to hold it on that side of town because there are more/cheaper hotels/motels, but was unable to secure a meeting room in any of the locations. It's a big trucking area and they tend to keep things basic. Let me know if anyone would want more information about other accommodations.

Hmmm ... but there is no weak State tournaments. Even class "B" or class "C" Divisions usually collect good players anyway.Bobby_Loewen wrote:i would love to attend..but i did receive an email..how only the skilled masters join this tournament..and it occured to me..do i really want to drive 3 hours..to get my butt kicked?as a 1st time tournament player..
All after all ... there is only one way to prove pudding - eat it !
Driving 3 hours is piece of cake !!! For me it's about 7.5 hours one way. You are very lucky man.
I wish you best in your journey.
Think this way: checkers is a life hobby. You will get fun, joy and new friends. Does your neighboors, co-workers and friends have the same possibility "to escape from reality" during very tough economy and uncertaincies ?

I'll be there...............and I am no skilled master.....in fact, I am nothing more than a wood pusher compared to most.
I mean, I know enough to not walk into a two for three shot, but,I know no 3-move openings, and barely a few GAYP.
It will be my first crossboard tourney, and I don't expect to win even a single game, but....I certainly will try
I am looking forward to it....hope you decide to make it.
COME ON MAN !!!! EAT THE PUDDING !!!!

And, to sweeten the pot....
I will give to the highest finishing non-World Champion a Complete Set of Churchill's Compilations.
If the highest finishing non-World Champion is not interested in this, it will go to the highest finishing Pennsylvania player who is interested in having it....
This set was originally owned by Mr. Paul Ottey, a prominent Pennsylvania Checkerist from a few generations ago who passed away in 1990. He bequeathed all of his Checkers books to Earl Hangen with the understanding that Earl would give any duplicates to other Mail Players. As I was an active mail Player at the time, Earl gave Ottey's set to me. I now have Earl's set, and would like Ottey's to go to a good home.
This consists of 12 3-ring binders, along with the CC "news pages" which will help in learning how to use this set.

Hi Bobby, My name is...... I have attended the PA tournament in 07 to 09. If you are new to tournaments and your a average player just to let you know this might not be the tournament for you. Its a small tournament held very well and organized but its 1 division unlike most tournaments that are bigger have 3 divisions. Pa tournament by most players is one of the hardest tournaments there is. For experience you will surely get that aspect of it. But wanting to do well and have a chance to place high it will be hard almost impossible for a average player if you are. And can be discouraging and upsetting not to mention expensive with gas prices. I just will hate to see someone spend their money and time and be upset probably never return. Im honest wanted to give you a heads up. On a positive note you can say you played some of the best players in the world. Anyways you still want to go thats awesome its fun to meet new players!
he was nice about it..i asked more questions..but now im a little hesitant..u know? i really do want to join.. i mean where are the jersey tournaments haha

For those that have never attended a checker tournament, I would surely recommend that you do so. One may feel that such events are only for the better players - their names are like everyday household words for many of us - but this perception is entirely untrue. These annual get togethers are really fun for everyone regardless of your level of play. The comradery that is experienced, not only in playing checkers but also through the intermingling with the notables of our game is like taking a walk in checker history. The old-time players are virtual encyclopedias of knowledge. Their stories of the personalities of the game command one's attention, and their play across the board leaves one spellbound in amazement.
Nobody loses in these events, for the memories of the cast of characters that you meet will be treasured more than the winning of any game. What better way to meet a group of nice guys, make a new friend or two, and get to play checkers all at the same time. I hope to see you there soon, so please try to take in the next checker tournament in your area, for "Tournament Fun For Everyone."
Best regards..."Pal" Bucker

Bobby, you are getting a lot of good advice from these guys! Take heed of what they have said and go!...is "winning it all" the only reason to go to tournaments, or to pick which division you play in? Not by a long "shot."

Bobby, 2 divisions is not out of the realm of possibilities, but would be more likely if you showed up
Even if there are not 2 divisions, you will certainly get some games at your own skill level, some below (like myself), and maybe some above. What other opportunity will you have to drive a few hours and say you've met and played the World Champion (assuming you're coming Alex
)
I played in my first tournament 8 years ago and I can't say that I remember any of the games, but I'll never forget the people I met that day. The next year I brought my college roomate to the Ohio State tournament because he was interested and I didn't feel like making the drive alone. He had never played checkers but we needed an extra player to make for an even number so he ended up playing. Even to this day he comments on how much fun he had and how nice everyone was.
