Bob, you are the Best, and I wish you the Best! Your on-line checkers magazine is continuing a grand tradition of checker periodicals and columns enjoyed by checkerists world wide for generations. Your electronic publishing efforts have brought back many of the classic checker books. I was thrilled to see Basic Checkers by Richard L. Fortman published in "hard copy." Thanks to you, Jim Loy, Louisa Gilani, and John Acker, Basic Checkers is available with all net proceeds going to the ACF Youth Fund....It is fun to escape to Marvin's World, and your work has made the real world a bit like Marvin's World, that is to say a better place! --George Hay

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery, Mr. Newell...eye problems are hard to accept...having lost most of the vision in my right eye several years ago due to a detached retina, I can relate.

Best wishes Bob.
John, Do you know what surgery is Bob getting? Is it cataracts? Or retinal detachment? Or something else?

Re: Bob Newell - best wishes!
I'm replying a bit late, as I have finally returned home to Honolulu after about seven endlessly long weeks in the Denver area.
I want to thank everyone for their well-wishes and very nice comments. It makes a big difference and I really and truly appreciate it.
I was found to have a very large choroidal melanoma in my right eye. My vision in that eye went from normal to almost zero in just about a week. The tumor had become large enough to cause a retinal detachment. The condition is rare and not treated in Hawai`i so I went to a center that specializes in eye tumors.
The really good news is that tests show that there is not yet any detectable spread of the cancer.
I had two surgeries: one to insert a radioactive disk in my eye, and one five days after to remove the disk. The disk is about the size of two quarters stacked together and having this sewn inside my eye was an experience never to be repeated!
The surgeries and treatment went very well, though two major surgeries and a lot of radiation mean a long recovery time; they are saying months instead of days or weeks, which I find very frustrating.
Time will tell if the treatment worked properly; I'm also awaiting results of a biopsy on the tumor. So the jury is out, but I'm very optimistic and am trying to return to as normal a schedule as I can. My eyesight is pretty poor and it's hard to use the computer for more than 20 or 30 minutes at a time, but I expect improvement.
Although eye-intensive projects such as reissuing Solid Checkers are going to have to wait, I expect to be able to continue to publish the Checker Maven as I have done now for most of seven years.
Thanks again to everyone for your support. This is a great community.
